Star Trek: Picard actor Todd Stashwick hints at his Captain Shaw character potentially returning for a future spinoff of the titular sci-fi franchise.

Star Trek: Picard actor Todd Stashwick keeps hope alive of Captain Liam Shaw returning in a future spinoff of the eponymous sci-fi franchise despite the character being killed off in Season 3's penultimate episode.

During an interview with Inverse, Stashwick addressed the possibility of Shaw coming back in a Star Trek show down the line, even after the somewhat polarizing Starfleet hero died during Season 3, Episode 9, "Võx." While he's satisfied if Shaw's story ended for good in Picard, he's open to bringing the character back in a Star Trek spinoff. “If there’s a story need down the road, they will find a way to fulfill that need,” he said. “But for now, for the purposes of Picard; it’s a very interesting and deeply satisfying arc for this man. He’s carried a lot in his heart for a very long time, and I think he found a way, to cosmically and karmically pay back the gift that was given to him so long ago.”

Star Trek's Captain Shaw

During "Võx," Shaw, the commanding officer aboard the USS Titan-A, took a fatal phaser blast to save his The Next Generation cohorts. However, a hologram of Shaw appeared in the Picard series finale, "The Next Generation," later recommending that Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) be promoted to Captain. According to Stashwick, Shaw's death ideally underlines his story arc. “His death is all about what serves the story. When you look at Shaw’s arc, there is a story of reconciliation with his own loss and his own pain,” he said.

Picard showrunner and executive producer Terry Matalas has hinted at a potential spinoff of the series, Star Trek: Legacy, with the show set in the 25th century while exploring the Last and Next Generations. While Matalas hasn't mentioned specifics about Legacy and denied the spinoff is in development at Paramount+, he has said in multiple interviews he knows how Stashwick and his character would be involved should there be any future Star Trek show.

Much of "The Last Generation" paid off several storylines, including Shaw's arc and The Next Generation, while also featuring a post-credits with John de Lancie's Q return despite being killed off during Season 2. Picard Season 3 was a big hit with fans while industry buffs constantly heaped praises on the Star Trek series.

Picard wasn't Stashwick's first entry in the Star Trek franchise as the show's Captain Shaw previously starred as Talok on UPN's Enterprise series in 2004. Some of his other notable works include appearances in the CSI franchise, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Teen Wolf, Grey's Anatomy and 12 Monkeys.
