Captain America's Most Broken Ally Rejoins the War – And They Have the Perfect Weapon

Marvel's Captain America #750 brings someone close to Steve Rogers back as they plot to bring the Outer Circle down thanks to a new weapon.

As Captain America #750 unfolds, Steve Rogers and Co. attempt to recover from the wake of the Cold War. Sam Wilson has doubts about being Captain America, while the rest of the heroes ponder a way forward at Roger Aubrey's funeral. They're celebrating his life as the Destroyer, but still, they're broken how they lost him in the war against M.O.D.O.C.

Clearly, while they defeated the White Wolf in the affiliated firefight, it's all taken a toll mentally and physically. In the "Nothing But a Fight" chapter (by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard and VC's Joe Caramagna), some demons of old are put to bed as Steve comes face to face with Bucky Barnes. He's angry how the Winter Soldier betrayed them, but luckily, Bucky makes a case and rejoins Steve's team. This time, they've got a major equalizer in their pockets that could destroy the Outer Circle permanently, completing Bucky's redemption.

Captain America Confirms Why He Needs Bucky Back

Here, Steve and Bucky have a heartfelt conversation away from everyone at the funeral. Bucky's sorry for going off on his own, but it had to be done. Despite the victory over White Wolf, Cap admits he's bitter because Bucky left him alone. Bucky didn't inform Cap of the plan to infiltrate the Outer Circle by joining as the new Revolution. To make it worse, Bucky co-opted Peggy Carter and helped White Wolf wage war in Dimension Z.

This was all to get Ian Rogers to become a freedom fighter and take over Dimension Z. In Bucky's mind, it'd help Steve let Ian go be his own man. At least, temporarily. Bucky felt that Steve's love for Ian would be a weakness, so he arranged the war to remind Steve that his son could fend on his own. However, Steve confesses he didn't like being kept in the dark over all the violence. He even admits love can fuel a soldier. In fact, his love for Bucky and their brotherhood is what made him invincible during the World War II days, not some serum.

This speaks volumes of their bond, reminding fans what Steve sees as his true strength. It's his humanity, which is why he adores Bucky for helping him against bullies. And for keeping him grounded when he got empowered due to the serum. Bucky's his true north, so he's glad to have an apologetic Bucky back in the fold. Now's the chance for the former Winter Soldier to right the wrongs, and remind fans why Steve endorsed him donning the mantle and shield in the past.

Captain America Confirms Steve Rogers Has to Evolve

Now, given Bucky's intricate plan caused a lot of collateral damage, it's only natural Steve assesses everything objectively. While he hates the mass casualties and how they almost destroyed Dimension Z, he realizes it was proper strategy. Bucky's always been better at military tactics, so Steve can appreciate that. He finally sees how Bucky made Ian stronger, resolute and filled with conviction. To the point, no one can invade Ian's 'kingdom' again.

This plants an integral seed in Steve's mind. He has to adapt, evolve and get better as well. It's what his team needs and what Roger would want. Steven even absolves Bucky of guilt and blame, making it clear the Destroyer sacrificed his life against M.O.D.O.C. It's the risk they all take when they step out into the field, so Bucky shouldn't live in regret. It's a move Steve would have actually pushed forth himself on the chessboard. As such, he can tell that he has a killer edge to him that can make him better.

Progress is part and parcel of the game, after all. Sharon's now become the new Destroyer, while the Redacted has taken up the title of Nomad. Everyone wants Roger's death to inspire change and greatness. Steve, knowing the Outer Circle are terrorists that are usually five steps ahead, wants to level up unpredictably. It's why he's glad to have Bucky there to help him make this adjustment, because if they couldn't figure Bucky's schemes out, they'll have a hard time sussing out what Steve plans next.

Captain America Gives Steve and Bucky the Ultimate Weapon

As fate would have it, Steve and Bucky would quickly be blessed with the perfect weapon for the job. Sentinel of Liberty, from this very same creative team last year, retconned the origins of Steve's shield. It turns out, it was made by a Wakandan scientist, Dr. Agboje. As his descendant meets Steve and Bucky up, they're left a letter from the deceased engineer.

It contains schematics of the Outer Circle's main base, the Shadow Capitol. There's a failsafe for a circular object to be inserted to bring the empire crumbling down, literally. Shockingly, the heroes realize it's the shield itself, nodding to the flaw in Star Wars' Death Star. It's a brilliant culmination of Captain America stories over the years, especially considering Ika Agboje joined the Outer Circle in the past as their main engineer: the Machine.

Now, everything is paying dividends, with these Wakandans laying the groundwork for the villains' self-destruction. Steve is in awe of the template provided, eager to start the mission with Bucky. He has the recipe for success and the essential tools, so he wants to get started ASAP. That said, Steve will have to convince the others to get on board with Bucky. While Black Widow and Peggy may trust him, Sharon won't like how he put Ian in the firing line; or how the dominoes he tipped over led to Roger's death. Ultimately, egos and differences will have to be set aside. The mission's more important and they finally have the ultimate key needed to burn the new Hydra to the ground.
