Devon Sawa Reveals He Wasn't Paid for Final Destination 5 Appearance

Devon Sawa recalls how he wasn't paid when archival footage of him was used for Final Destination 5.

Devon Sawa says he wasn't only unpaid for his appearance in Final Destination 5, but he didn't even know about it until after the movie's release.

In the original Final Destination movie, released in 2000, Sawa played Alex Browning, one of the few survivors who'd managed to cheat death. Unfortunately for Alex, the character was killed off-screen, as revealed in Final Destination 2. The 2011 sequel Final Destination 5 links back to the original movie with archival footage used to bring back Alex for a special appearance. However, ComicBook.com reports that Sawa has revealed that the cameo came as a surprise to him, as he wasn't paid a cent for it. The comments come shortly after the SAG-AFTRA strike began.

"I never got paid a cent for Final Destination 5," Sawa explains. "They didn't even tell me I was in it when they invited me to the premiere. In the first contract for part one there was a section the stated they owned the footage and could use it in the future. I assumed for press. I was wrong." Clarifying that his issue is with the studio execs and not the cast and crew of the sequel, Sawa added, "This has nothing to do with the filmmakers by the way. I loved FD5. I love them all to be completely honest. And I'm super excited to see number 6."

As Sawa says, a sixth installment of the Final Destination series is in development. Last year, it was announced that New Line Cinema was moving forward on a new movie with Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Freaks) directing. While full plot details haven't been revealed, the project has been described as a "relaunch" of the franchise. Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) penned the treatment for the sequel while Guy Busick (Ready or Not) and Lori Evans Taylor (Wicked Wicked Games) were brought on board to pen the screenplay.

The original Final Destination was directed by James Wong. Jeffrey Reddick created the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Wong and Glen Morgan. The movie, which was originally conceived as an X-Files episode, tells the story of a teenager (Devon Sawa) who convinces a small group of friends to exit an airplane after having a horrific premonition of a mid-air explosion. The premonition turns out to be right, though Death does not like to be cheated, subsequently going after the survivors of the crash one by one.

You can currently find Final Destination streaming for free on Pluto TV. The sixth movie doesn't yet have a release date.
