Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake Reportedly in Development

A former employee of Virtuos claims the video game developer is working on a remake of the critically acclaimed The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

A former employee of video game developer Virtuos claimed a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is in development.

According to Xfire, a now-deleted Reddit user posted news regarding several projects currently reported to be in production at Virtuos, which notably included a remake of Oblivion codenamed project "Altar." The leaker claimed Altar was being developed with a pairing system combining Unreal Engine 5 with Oblivion's original game engine, with new graphics rendered on Unreal Engine 5 and various elements such as physics and gameplay lifted from Oblivion. A Virtuos branch studio located in Paris is heading the project, though Virtuos' subsidiary developer Black Shamrock is also reportedly working on the Oblivion remake's art assets. While the former employee didn't give an exact date, they additionally claimed Virtuos was aiming to release the title by 2024 or early 2025.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remains one of the most beloved titles of the acclaimed The Elder Scrolls series. The story is set in the province of Cyrodiil and follows the story of a lone adventurer, who sets out on a quest to close the portals leading to the demonic realms of Oblivion and stop the invasion of the Daedra. Though not as popular as its sequel The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Oblivion is still widely regarded with universal acclaim by fans and critics for its impressive open world and immersive action-RPG gameplay, with the title selling 1.7 million copies less than a month after its release.

Skyrim Modders Announce Oblivion Remake

Coincidentally, a fan-made remake of Oblivion was also announced earlier this year. Dubbed The Elder Scrolls: Skyblivion, the fan remake is being developed on Skyrim's Creation Engine by a team of modders. The developers of the project previously uploaded a trailer for the Oblivion remake, which showcased recreations of several iconic locations from the original game, such as the Imperial City, the Oblivion Gates and the Emperor's Palace.

"Making games takes time, this does double for a volunteer project the size of a AAA game that took a team of fulltime devs years to make. Regardless, we would like to share today that Skyblivion is in a state where we can promise a 2025 release at the latest," the developers said. "We hope with your support to finish the final steps in completing our dream, maybe even beating our own estimation."

Virtuos' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake is reportedly scheduled for release in 2024 or early 2025.
