Oppenheimer Castmates Rib Cillian Murphy About ‘One Almond’ Diet
Emily Blunt and Matt Damon talk about Cillian Murphy's dietary habits while they were shooting Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer actors Emily Blunt and Matt Damon have playfully revealed lead actor Cillian Murphy's grueling dinner regimen while shooting the Christopher Nolan-directed biopic.
In an interview with ET via YouTube, Blunt and Damon spoke about their experiences shooting the movie together with all of the cast in one location and staying in the same hotel. Blunt said, "I think because it's unusual for all the actors to be on location and we were shooting in the middle of this remote area in the New Mexican desert, it was one hotel, and we were all together... There was one restaurant, and that was it, and we all went to have dinner there." Damon chimed in, explaining that the restaurant was open for only breakfast, lunch, and dinner, meaning the entire cast had to eat together. He said, "You would go in, and you would see everybody, so everyone would just end up sitting together."
The conservation quickly gravitated toward Cillian Murphy, "We invited Cillian to dinner every night, and he never went," Damon said. Blunt and Damon claim, in good humor, that Murphy was eating one almond and a slice of apple most nights. "He [Murphy] was losing so much weight for the part that he just didn't eat dinner ever," Damon elaborated. Blunt and Damon have also reflected on Murphy turning down their dinner invitation in another interview, with Damon adding, "The sheer volume of what he [Murphy] had to take on and shoulder is so monumental. Of course, he didn't want to come and have dinner with us. He couldn't. His brain was just too full."
Cillian Murphy Reveals How He Got Cast As J. Robert Oppenheimer
Murphy recently talked about how he was cast by acclaimed director Nolan to star in Oppenheimer. "I had no idea he was going to call me. He just called me out of the blue. That's his MO; you never hear from him, and then he calls," Murphy said laughing. "So he called me, and I genuinely didn't know what it would be, and then he said, 'I am making this movie about Oppenheimer, and I would love you to play Oppenheimer.' It was a big shock, and a very pleasant one, but then you go, 'Okay, now I have a lot of work to do.'"
Murphy and Nolan have collaborated many times, with Murphy appearing in The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk. Oppenheimer, however, will mark the first time the actor will appear as the lead character in a Nolan film.
