Paul Wesley Addresses Kirk and Spock's First Meeting in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reveals the moment when Kirk and Spock first meet.
A recent episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reveals when James T. Kirk first meets future best pal Spock, and actor Paul Wesley spoke about what it was like to film the monumental moment.
With Strange New Worlds serving as a prequel series, Wesley and Ethan Peck respectively play younger versions of William Shatner's Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Spock. When considering the future adventures through space the two will end up having together, the moment is especially significant, even if the characters don't yet realize that. Speaking about the big moment with ComicBook.com, Wesley explains how he'd brought this up to the episode's director, Dan Liu, wondering if anyone else realized just how huge this was for Star Trek canon.
"We had discussed this moment, because I remember we were on set, and Dan, the director was like, 'Okay, great. Let's shoot this,'" as the actor regales. "And I remember we shot the first take, and I was like, 'Okay, wait.' And I was like, 'Okay, can we just pause for a moment here?' And I was like, 'Dan, this is a really big deal. It's the first time Kirk and Spock meet. And, we're creating canon here. And, we want to really emphasize this moment. And maybe we should do this. Maybe we should [make it a bigger deal].'"
Paul Wesley Realizes How Significant This Moment Is
While Wesley knows that this is a major moment for Star Trek lore, that wasn't lost on Liu. However, the director reminded Wesley that Kirk and Spock cannot predict the future, so as far as they know, they're just meeting another person amid their travels. Wesley explained, "He's like, 'Dude, no. It's the exact opposite. They're just two dudes that are meeting. And, there's a curiosity, and there's something that draws them to one another, and there's the beginning of that friendship, but they don't know that yet. And so, let's just not try to milk this for something that it's not yet. Let's let it grow.' And I thought it was a smart, understated choice because just think about how forced it could have been. Sometimes, the imagination is more powerful than anything else. And so, let's imagine what this relationship will be, as opposed to handing it on a platter to the audience."
There are three episodes left for the second season of Strange New Worlds, and the season is set to conclude on Aug. 10. The show is renewed for Season 3, but production is on hiatus until after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Previous episodes can be streamed on Paramount+.
