1 Big Lesson Strange New Worlds’ Captain Pike Learned From Enterprise’s Archer
Captain Christopher Pike is a sociable Captain in Strange New Worlds and he must have emulated crew dinners from Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise.
Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds must have learned one big lesson from his predecessor, Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) of Star Trek: Enterprise. Archer was the first Captain of the Enterprise, and his 22nd-century exploration of the galaxy aboard the NX-01 Enterprise is legendary. In Strange New Worlds' crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks, Captain Pike revealed his high regard for what Archer and the NX-01 Enterprise achieved.
By virtue of Star Trek: Enterprise's retcons as a prequel, Jonathan Archer pioneered several aspects as Captain of the Enterprise that his successors became known for. For instance, Archer was the first Captain to have a Vulcan Science Officer, as Subcommander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) would predate Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck, Leonard Nimoy) by nearly a century. Archer also dedicated his life to Enterprise, avoiding any known lasting romantic relationship when he was a starship Captain like Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) would. In terms of the NX-01 Enterprise's crew, Captain Archer was a leader who inspired loyalty, and he had one particular tradition that Captain Pike emulated on Strange New Worlds.
Captain Pike’s Enterprise Crew Dinners Came From Archer
Captain Pike hosts dinners for his senior staff and crew on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and this may be something Chris learned from Captain Archer. Jonathan liked to host T'Pol and his best friend, Chief Engineer Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), for dinners where the human Starfleet Officers would dine on the finest steaks whipped up by Enterprise's unseen chef. Occasionally, Archer invited other members of his crew or dignitaries visiting Enterprise to dine with him as well. This personal touch is something Captain Pike adopted on Strange New Worlds.
Unlike Archer, Pike is a gourmet chef, and he personally cooks for his crew and special visitors like his girlfriend, Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano). Pike's dinners are already legendary on Strange New Worlds, and an invitation to dine in the Captain's luxurious quarters is something the crew rarely turns down. Pike uses these dinners to get to know Enterprise's officers on a more personal level, and this is also something the affable and approachable Captain Archer was known for on Star Trek: Enterprise. Hosting dinners for their crew bonds Archer and Pike as Captains of the Enterprise even though they are generations apart.
Why Pike Hero Worships Captain Archer & Star Trek: Enterprise
It's not surprising Captain Pike looks up to Captain Archer. Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) called the 23rd century "the golden age of exploration," but Pike might counter that it's Archer's 22nd century that is truly the golden age. The NX-01 Enterprise was the first Starfleet ship to explore deep space; every contact with a new species was historic, and Archer's ship was mostly on its own, getting by on good fortune, boldness, and the occasional help from allies Enterprise was able to forge friendships with. Even compared to Strange New Worlds' 23rd century, Star Trek: Enterprise's 22nd century was a rough-and-tumble open frontier filled with wonder and dangers.
Of course, Captain Pike would romanticize Captain Archer's more 'Wild West' era of Starfleet, and Pike naturally also images what it would be like to command the far less technologically advanced, but still sleek and beautiful NX-01 Enterprise. However, both Pike and Archer understand that the beating heart of a starship is its crew, and they both make it a point to get to know their people on a personal level. Pike simply took Archer's habit of regularly dining with his Science Officer and Chief Engineer on Star Trek: Enterprise a step further and opened his kitchen and dining room to his senior staff on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
