Barbie Crosses Another Major Domestic Box Office Milestone

Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is set to cross a major box office milestone domestically in its fourth weekend in theaters.

Barbie continues to smash through box office milestones, with the Warner Bros. film on track to cross $500 million domestically today.

According to Deadline, Barbie is expected to top the box office again in its fourth weekend with $31.8 million. The Greta Gerwig-directed feature film has so far grossed $492.6 million domestically, meaning that Friday's box office haul should push it over the $500 million milestone. Globally, Barbie has cracked the $1 billion worldwide box office mark. So far, the only other 2023 movie to have achieved that milestone is Universal's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is currently the highest-grossing movie of the year with $1.356 billion.

Barbie has seen great commercial success since its release in theaters on July 21. The film opened domestically with $162 million -- the largest debut ever for a film directed or co-directed by a woman and the biggest opening weekend of 2023 to date. Despite being banned in some Middle Eastern countries due to local censorship laws, Barbie has still cleaned up at the international box office.

Not Everyone Is Loving Barbie

While Barbie has been well-received by critics -- and is currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes -- there have been a few online personalities that have not responded favorably to the movie and its messaging. Talk show host Bill Maher recently blasted Barbie, calling it "preachy" and "man-hating." He also criticized the film's decision to portray the Mattel board as being exclusively made up of men when in real life it's seven men and five women, stating "not perfect even-steven, but not the way the board IN THE MOVIE - which takes place in 2023 - is portrayed."

Margot Robbie leads Barbie, with the film following her titular doll on a journey of self-discovery after a bout of existential crisis. Ryan Gosling co-stars as Ken while the rest of the film's ensemble is made up of alternative versions of the iconic dolls, such as Issa Rae as President Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie, Emma Mackey as Physicist Barbie and Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, with Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa and John, among others, playing different variations of Ken.

What's Next for Mattel?

At this time, a Barbie sequel hasn't been officially announced, though Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz has strongly implied that one is probably on the way given the film's billion-dollar success. The toy company is also hard at work adapting most of its catalog to film, including Hot Wheels, Barney the Dinosaur and Magic 8 Ball.
