CD Projekt Confirms Why Phantom Liberty Will be the Only Cyberpunk 2077 DLC
CD Projekt recently confirmed that their switch to the Unreal Engine is the reason Phantom Liberty will be the one and only Cyberpunk 2077 DLC.
CD Projekt Red confirmed the reason why they have no plans for further expansions for Cyberpunk 2077 despite its recent resurgence.
In a quarterly earnings call this week, the Polish developer said that the decision to cap off Cyberpunk's development with the Phantom Liberty expansion was a purely "technological" decision as a result of an engine change for the sequel. According to SVP of business development for CD Projekt Michał Nowakowski, the company has moved over to the Unreal Engine instead of their in-house Red Engine, which would complicate the development of any further expansions. “It’s a technological decision to be honest,” Nowakowski said. “This is the last time we’re working on the Red Engine for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future as you know we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic."
Phantom Liberty is a major expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 which adds a whole new storyline, gameplay mechanics, and new locations to explore and characters to encounter along the way. The expansion is also releasing alongside a massive free update to the game which severely overhauls many of its core mechanics to reportedly make it much more dynamic and similar to the game CD Projekt had originally promised.
Some of these new mechanics include vehicle combat, an overhauled police and law system, a slew of new weapons and gear, and a general overhaul of the base game's experience. These features will be included for free alongside the release of Phantom Liberty with Update 2.0.
Shortly after the reveal of Phantom Liberty's first trailer, CD Projekt confirmed that they are working on a full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 currently titled Project Orion as well as a new mainline entry in the Witcher series. While Cyberpunk uses the Red engine, the developer is reportedly switching to Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5, which has become somewhat standard for many AAA titles in recent years due to its robust features and graphical fidelity.
CD Projekt's involvement with Epic Games goes even deeper, however, as the company recently entered into a 15-year partnership with the Fortnite developer which will give them untethered access to the Unreal Engine. According to Nowakowski, the studio's refusal of any further expansions for the game had nothing to do with the game's sales numbers or the projected success of the expansion and was purely based on technological grounds as their partnership with Epic brings in brand-new resources for the developers.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is set to release on Sept. 26 alongside Update 2.0 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The update and expansion are not coming to last-gen consoles.
