Fast & Furious 11 Director Teases Character Shift for Jason Momoa's Villain

Fast X: Part 2 helmer Louis Leterrier suggests fans will see a different Dante Reyes in the upcoming sequel of the star-studded action film franchise.

Fast X director Louis Leterrier hints that moviegoers will see a different version of Jason Momoa's androgynous and savage villain in Fast X: Part 2 as he continues his fight for vengeance.

Speaking with Empire, Leterrier insisted that Momoa's character, Dante Reyes, will "evolve" in Fast X: Part 2, suggesting there are sides of the big bad Fast & Furious fans have yet to see. The French helmer played up Dante's "duality" while praising Momoa's ability to switch up personalities seamlessly while performing. "It’s never twice the same with Jason. Dante will truly evolve. Let’s explore something we haven’t seen before," Leterrier said. "He was fuelled by vengeance. He could have played it dark, angry. But it was interesting to play with the duality and the push-pull within the character, where within the same sentence he’s laughing and feels the pain of losing everything. Only an actor like Jason could have done that."

Momoa played Dante, the son of slain Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes, who was killed following a confrontation with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) in Fast Five. Dante spends much of Fast X hunting down Dom and his family as he unleashes his rage while teaming up with Cipher (Charlize Theron) along the way. In Fast X's post-credits scene, Dante teased a potential heavyweight clash with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's lawman character, Luke Hobbs, as he threatens his revenge mission is far from over.

Jason Moma's Villain Portrayal Has Been Widely Praised

While Fast X was mixed at best critically, attracting a 56% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, Momoa was widely lauded as the best part of the 10th Fast & Furious installment. His scene-stealing performance was cited as believable and engaging, with some calling him the best villain in Fast & Furious history. His performance stood out so much that it reportedly drew the ire of Diesel, though Diesel later denied there were any issues between himself and Momoa.

During an interview this past May with CBR, Leterrier built on Momoa's excitement to play a villain, and they tweaked things along the way to make the character as unique as possible without being too over the top. The director said, "He was like, 'I get to play the bad guy!' He hadn't played a bad guy in a long time, and he loves playing bad guys. We started playing together. We had no time to rehearse. So we're like, 'Okay, let's just go and shoot and see what comes up.' Then we tweaked and came up with fun one-liners and affectations and stuff like that. We had a blast and played with it."

Fast X: Part 2 will take place after the upcoming Hobbs spinoff movie, which was recently confirmed by Johnson when officially announcing his Fast & Furious return. While Diesel revealed in the lead-up of Fast X that the film was part of a closing trilogy for the franchise, Leterrier has hinted the trilogy may not happen, aiming to take things one movie at a time before seeing what the future holds.
