John Wick Director Provides an Optimistic Update on His Ghost of Tsushima Movie

John Wick director Chad Stahelski offers a positive update on his Ghost of Tsushima project, insisting that he’s eager to adapt the game.

Chad Stahelski, the acclaimed director behind the John Wick franchise, is more excited than ever before about the opportunity to adapt the hit PlayStation video game Ghost of Tsushima.

Speaking on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, the filmmaker noted that he'd be very happy if the samurai story was the next project of his that entered full production after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. "One of my biggest passion projects is Ghost of Tsushima... It's a challenge to not do less than what the guys at Sucker Punch have done, to use an all Japanese and all Asian cast for the Mongols, and to get the whole rest of the world behind that, that's a cool thing to do," Stahelski explained. "It doesn't have to be all subtitled, all in English, there's a way to express that. Anyone that knows the game, it's a fantastic story, it's an incredible myth, it ties into some very specific Japanese mythology, but at the same time, it transcends any nationality. I think it's one of the best video game stories..."

This isn't the first time Stahelski has spoken at length about Ghost of Tsushima. The director previously explained that one aspect of the game that he'd love to incorporate into his movie is "Kurosawa Mode," a visual filter in the source material that looked to emulate the style of beloved Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. While he said that "conversations" would definitely be had about whether the film would be shot in black and white, he further insisted that he was eager to use modern technology to better capture the beauty of the world. "Just what we've learned over the past couple years with DI, digital intermediate -- the coloring at the end [of production] and what you can do with new technology and with new Alexa cameras, that's kind of allowed us, hopefully, to take cinematography to the level that Ghost deserves," Stahelski said.

Upgrading the Ghost

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Tsushima follows protagonist Jin Sakai, a disgraced samurai that seeks revenge on a Mongol warlord who has invaded his home and slaughtered his people. The original PlayStation 4 game recieved glowing reviews from fans ad critics for its sharp writing, stunning open-world and satisfying combat. The game proved to be such a succes that a revamped version, titled Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, was released in 2021 for PlayStation 5.
