LeVar Burton Closing Deal to Host Trivial Pursuit Game Show on The CW

The CW is reportedly finalizing a deal for LeVar Burton's game show based on Trivial Pursuit.

It's looking like the Trivial Pursuit game show hosted by LeVar Burton might have finally found its home.

The CW has reportedly been finalizing a deal to pick up the game show, per Deadline. It's an update that comes nearly two years after it was first reported that Burton had teamed up with eOne to host a new game show based on Trivial Pursuit. The Star Trek: The Next Generation star is serving as an executive producer on the series in addition to his plans to host. It comes after Burton served as a guest host for Jeopardy! following the passing of Alex Trebek, a job that he'd campaigned for only to find that it wasn't the right fit for him in the end.

"Trivial Pursuit is one of the best-known brands in the gaming universe. I am thrilled to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to bring this beloved game to market as a premium show for television," Burton said in a statement when announcing the show in 2021.

eOne's President of Global Unscripted TV, Tara Long, added, "LeVar Burton has been an iconic member of American pop culture for decades from Roots to Reading Rainbow to Star Trek and beyond. His love for intellectual curiosity paired with his ability to connect with audiences worldwide make him the perfect partner to bring Hasbro’s beloved trivia game to households in a new and exciting way."

LeVar Burton's Jeopardy! Hosting Didn't Work Out

When it was announced after Alex Trebek's death that guest hosts would be utilized for Jeopardy! until a permanent host was named, there was immediately a fan movement that was spawned for Burton to get the job. The actor himself would join in on the campaign, making it clear he'd love to host Jeopardy!. While he was ultimately given a brief stint hosting the show, Burton would reveal to Newsy last year that he felt like the "fix was in," likely alluding to executive producer Mike Richards ultimately naming himself as Trebek's successor.

“I honestly thought that I was well-suited for it,” Burton said. “As it turns out, it really wasn’t a competition after all. The fix was in. Experiencing a very public defeat, a humiliation if you will, was sobering. And what I learned from the experience, really, is that everything happens for a reason."

Richards wound up stepping down as Jeopardy! host shortly after he'd officially started due to controversial statements he'd made on a podcast. Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings have since been serving as alternating hosts of the popular game show.
