Our Flag Means Death Hits the High Seas With Season 2 Trailer

Our Flag Means Death sets sail as the Season 2 Trailer teases the upcoming high sea drama.


The period romantic-comedy, Our Flag Means Death is set to arrive with its Season 2 on Max.


Returning to the screen, the show initially premiered last year as an HBO Max (now simply Max) original. A recently released teaser trailer on YouTube highlights what lies ahead in the upcoming second season, slated to premiere in October. The teaser can be viewed below.


Set against the backdrop of uncharted international waters, Our Flag Means Death revolves around the adventures of Stede Bonnet, a former landowner who became a pirate. The role of Bonnet is portrayed by Rhys Darby, as the character goes through an unexpected love affair with the enigmatic real-life pirate Edward "Ed" Teach, popularly known as Blackbeard, played by actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi. The show features the struggles of the two captains in the aftermath of an explosive breakup.


The 1-minute teaser trailer unveils the contrasting coping mechanisms of the heartbroken couple. In a voice narration by Stede, we can see him writing romantic messages to Ed in bottles. While Stede is shown to be hopeful that Blackbeard must really share these feelings, in a comic twist, we instead see the latter embracing his old dark traits, turning himself into a vengeful and violent force, sowing chaos, hurling knives, and even crashing a wedding at sea.


The first season of Our Flag Means Death was released to rave reviews with fans adoring the show's erratic humor and genuine queer representation. David Jenkins, who created and executive produces the series, disclosed that the heart of the show resides in Stede and Blackbeard's relationship, which compelled him to bring the concept to life. Citing the characters' bond as the show's origin, he said, "When Taika and I were first talking about it, he was like, 'Oh yeah, that's the show.' I first started reading about [the real] Stede and how he befriended Blackbeard, and we don't know why. Very quickly, it was like, 'Oh, it's a romance.'"


The upcoming season will also mark the return of various other beloved characters. The ensemble cast includes Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Con O'Neill, and Leslie Jones, joined by the newcomers Ruibo Qian and Erroll Shand. Notably, Minnie Driver is set to guest-star in the role of the well-known real-life pirate Anne Bonny. The season will premiere with a trio of episodes, followed by two new episodes streaming the next week.


Our Flag Means Death Season 2 will premiere on Oct. 5 on Max.
