The Equalizer 3 Set for Solid Domestic Opening at Box Office
The Equalizer 3 targets a solid return at the domestic box office as the Sony Pictures title nears its release in time for Labor Day weekend.
The Equalizer 3 hopes to be as hard-hitting at the box office as it is with its action sequences as the upcoming thriller looks set for a solid opening weekend in theaters.
Per Variety, The Equalizer threequel is expected to earn between $28 million and $30 million in domestic ticket sales between Sept. 1 and 3 at it's expected the movie will comfortably top the box office going up against another new release in Neill Blomkamp's Gran Turismo. The projected box-office tally could reach as high as $40 million by Sept. 4 to round out Labor Day weekend.
Despite the solid projection, The Equalizer 3's opening weekend pales in comparison to the previous two installments of the titular film series, which is based on the popular CBS series of the same name which aired from 1985 to 1989. The Equalizer enjoyed a debut weekend take of $34 million following its release in 2014 while 2018's The Equalizer 2 earned $36 million during its first three days in theaters. The Equalizer ended up making $192 million worldwide while the sequel raked in $190.4 million in global ticket sales.
The Equalizer 3 is expected to be the final installment of the action thriller franchise, featuring Denzel Washington as the former government assassin and vigilante Robert McCall. The Equalizer is the only movie series Washington has been a part of, once again teaming with franchise director Antoine Fuqua after the two enjoyed great success with 2001's Training Day, which won Washington his first Academy Award for Best Actor. Fuqua has teased The Equalizer 3 as Washington's "final masterpiece of violence."
Will Robert McCall's Equalizer Journey End With Part 3?
McCall is seen trying to make the most of his new life in southern Italy, enjoying stability as he moves further away from his past life as an assassin and meets some new friends. However, he soon realizes his friends are being controlled by the Sicilian Mafia, leading to tense confrontations between McCall and the local crime bosses as he tries to protect them while maintaining his new life. The film was shot between last October and this past January across Italy, including in Naples and Rome.
Early reviews of The Equalizer 3 have been mixed, with the film earning a 67% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the writing and pacing received criticism, Washington's performance and commitment were widely lauded. The film also stars Dakota Fanning, David Denman and Eugenio Mastrandrea.
