A Haunting in Venice Cast & Character Guide

A Haunting in Venice takes inspiration from an Agatha Christie novel. While some characters are the same as in the novel, others have changed.

A Haunting in Venice is the upcoming sequel to Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. The supernatural and mystery film marks the return of Kenneth Branagh as the iconic Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. In A Haunting in Venice, Poirot is now retired and must investigate a murder that happened at a séance he attended.

A Haunting in Venice is based on Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party. The film will introduce another recurring character in Agatha Christie's novels, writer Ariadne Oliver. It features an ensemble cast that includes Michelle Yeoh and Tina Fey, who will bring to life characters from the novel. And, much like in Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, A Haunting in Venice introduces some original characters created for the film as well.

Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot

Kenneth Branagh returns for a third time as the iconic and eccentric detective Hercule Poirot. Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective and one of the most popular characters created by Agatha Christie. In the original novel Hallowe'en Party, Poirot investigates the murder of thirteen-year-old Joyce Reynolds. But in A Haunting in Venice, Poirot will investigate a murder that happens at a séance he attended.

Kenneth Branagh is a prolific actor, writer, and director. He has starred in and directed several adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Harry Potter fans might recognize him from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where he portrays Gilderoy Lockhart. As a director, some of Branagh's films include 2011's Thor, the semi-biographical film Belfast, as well as A Haunting in Venice.

Michelle Yeoh as Joyce Reynolds

Michelle Yeoh is Joyce Reynolds, a self-proclaimed psychic that Poirot and Ariadne Oliver wish to discredit. Joyce also appears in Hallowe'en Party, yet they have very different stories. In Agatha Christie's novel, Joyce is a thirteen-year-old girl. She's a guest at the Halloween party and is murdered after claiming she once witnessed a murder herself. Ariadne was at the party and later went to Poirot for help.

Michelle Yeoh first rose to fame by starring in Hong Kong action films, where she performed her own stunts. Her international recognition came after her role in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. Michelle Yeoh has starred in several critically acclaimed films, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Tina Fey as Ariadne Oliver

Tina Fey portrays Ariadne Oliver, a recurring character in Agatha Christie's novels and a friend of Hercule Poirot. Ariadne is a writer of detective novels and is a fictionalized version of Christie herself. In Hallowe'en Party, Ariadne is a guest at a children's Halloween party where Joyce dies. She then asks Poirot for his help in solving the crime. In A Haunting in Venice, however, Ariadne invites Hercule Poirot to the séance to try to discredit a psychic.

Tina Fey is one of the most successful SNL alumni. She gained recognition outside of Saturday Night Live thanks to her work on 30 Rock, a sitcom Fey wrote and starred in, based on her time on SNL.

Kyle Allen as Maxime Gerard

Kyle Allen plays Maxime Gerard in A Haunting in Venice. However, in the Agatha Christie novel, there's no character by that name. Not much is known about the new characters so far, but Maxime Gerard could be a reimagining of the character Michael Garfield. Michael Garfield is a landscape gardener in Hallowe'en Party, noted for his extreme beauty.

Kyle Allen is a talented actor who gained recognition for his portrayal of Hawk Lane in The Path. Allen also had a role in American Horror Story: Apocalypse in 2018. Most recently, Kyle Allen gave life to Romeo in Hulu's Rosaline, a romantic comedy inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Camille Cottin as Olga Seminoff

In A Haunting in Venice, Camille Cottin gives life to Olga Seminoff. Olga is a character in the original novel Hallowe'en Party. She's an au pair accused of forging a will in her favor. She later disappears, seemingly to escape punishment when the lawyers note the forgery. But in A Haunting in Venice, Olga Seminoff appears to be part of the group that takes part in the séance.

Camille Cottin is a French actress who gained popularity thanks to the hidden-camera sketch series Connasse, and the film based on the series The Parisian Bitch, Princess of Hearts. Outside of France, Cottin made her English-language television debut in Killing Eve as Hélène.

Jamie Dornan as Dr. Leslie Ferrier

Jamie Dornan plays Dr. Leslie Ferrier. The character of Leslie Ferrier exists in the Agatha Christie novel, but he's not a doctor. In Hallowe'en Party, Leslie is a solicitor's clerk who was murdered before the start of the novel. Dornan's character in A Haunting in Venice could be a blend of two characters from the novel: Leslie Ferrier, and police surgeon Dr. Ferguson.

Jamie Dornan first received acclaim for his portrayal of serial killer Paul Spector in the crime drama series The Fall. He then earned worldwide recognition thanks to his role as Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey. Jamie Dornan has worked with Kenneth Branagh before, playing a fictionalized version of Branagh's father in the film Belfast.

Jude Hill as Leopold Ferrier

Another seemingly original character, Jude Hill plays Leopold Ferrier in A Haunting in Venice. In Hallowe'en Party, the character of Leopold Ferrier doesn't exist, only Joyce's brother Leopold Reynolds. The character name in A Haunting in Venice suggests Leopold will be a relative of Dr. Leslie Ferrier. In Agatha Christie's novel, Joyce's younger brother Leopold knew something about Joyce's death and started blackmailing the killer.

Jude Hill is a young up-and-coming actor. He made his feature film debut in Kenneth Branagh's semi-biographical film Belfast. In it, Jude Hill plays a smart nine-year-old called Buddy, a fictionalized version of Branagh.

Ali Khan and Emma Laird as Nicholas and Desdemona Holland

Ali Khan portrays Nicholas Holland, another original character, in A Haunting in Venice. While there is no Nicholas Holland in Hallowe'en Party, a character named Nicholas Ransom appears. Emma Laird portrays Desdemona Holland, a character that seems to be a gender-swapped version of Desmond Holland. In the novel, Nicholas and Desmond are two teenage boys who attend the Halloween party where Joyce was murdered.

Emma Laird started her career as a model before debuting as an actress in the Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown. Laird also starred in The Crowded Room alongside Tom Holland. Ali Khan is a young UK actor who's had roles in films like Ryan Reynold's 6 Underground and the British horror series Red Rose.
