Agatha: Darkhold Diaries Star Aubrey Plaza Recalls Failing Her Deadpool 2 Audition

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries star Aubrey Plaza reveals the reason why she failed her audition for one of the roles in Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2.

Parks and Recreation vet Aubrey Plaza confirmed that she previously auditioned for one of the roles in 2018’s Deadpool 2.

Before signing on to Disney+’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries series, Plaza was nearly cast in another high-profile Marvel project. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Plaza admitted that her failed Deadpool 2 audition was probably the one that she’s the most disappointed in out of all the roles she wanted to get but didn’t. She explained that she wasn’t in a good condition when she did her audition for the Ryan Reynolds-led superhero sequel, since her focus was split with another project she’s filming at the time. Coincidentally, the said project was FX’s Legion, a TV adaptation centered around an X-Men character.

"I don’t know, the one that sticks out to me for some reason, I think it was Deadpool 2. I had just come off a plane and I think I was shooting Legion at the time," Plaza recalled. "And I really wasn't in a good zone because you have to be in an auditioning zone and I was in a 'work zone.' That one hurt. Me and Ryan Reynolds, what could go wrong? We Would be great together..."

Plaza first gained recognition for breakout role as April Ludgate in NBC’s popular Parks and Recreation sitcom, in which she became known for her deadpan humor. Plaza also got the chance to showcase her versatility as an actress with acclaimed performances in 2017’s Ingrid Goes West and 2022’s Emily the Criminal. As for her portrayal of Harper Spiller in HBO’s The White Lotus Season 2, she's currently nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Aubrey Plaza Joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Despite losing the opportunity to star in Deadpool 2 with Reynolds, Plaza may still get a chance to share the screen with the anti-hero in the future, as she officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. The project will reunite Plaza with lead star Kathryn Hahn after starring together in Parks and Recreation. She previously admitted that it was actually one of the reasons why she’s excited to work on the MCU series. "She's a friend of mine. She speaks my language. To be able to get on screen with her and go toe-to-toe with her is what's driving me," she said. "I think it's cool that it's Marvel and all that, but I'm really just interested to work with Kathryn Hahn."

Recent reports suggest that Plaza would be playing the role of an original character named Rio Vidal, a green witch who’s part of Agatha Harkness’ coven. It is also being rumored that Rio Vidal will be the romantic interest of the titular witch, who first appeared in 2021’s WandaVision. Should this rumor be proven, it would be a groundbreaking moment for Marvel Studios since it would mark the first time that an LGBTQ+ character will be the main center of an MCU project.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is slated to debut in late 2024.
