D&D Party Thwarts DM's Game Plan Using Dungeon Garbage

During a Dungeons & Dragons session, a resourceful party on Reddit created a brand new piece of equipment out of trash to help them survive a fight.

A Dungeons & Dragons party outsmarted their DM by turning throwaway junk into makeshift footwear.

The DM, who goes under the username PuffyPantaloons on Reddit, recounted the story on the DnD subreddit. After leading their party into a dungeon with a floor made completely out of sand, the DM had them cross paths with a spectator, a lesser version of the iconic D&D beholder, and a large, burrowing, insectoid monster called an ankheg. The DM originally planned for the sand floor to hinder the party with a drastic speed reduction, making the battle ten times harder. "I thought I was soooo smart," they wrote, "but I hadn't counted on their cockamamie plan to avoid the movement speed reduction."

Creative D&D Problem Solving

As it turned out, the party grabbed a couple of barrel lids from the previous room. They proceeded to strap these lids to their feet, creating "sand shoes" that allowed them to traverse the sand floor at normal speed. When confronting the monsters, the attackers also managed to land two critical hits, spelling certain doom for the spectator. "Not only did the two melee players walk right up to the Spectator like it owed them money, but they both rolled Nat 20s, seemingly just to spite me. The damn thing went down before it had a chance to attack," the post reads. Despite the minor blow to their ego, the DM admitted that the session "might be one of their favorite moments thus far."

PuffyPantaloon's graceful acceptance of defeat earned them high accolades from the D&D community. The top comment, written by Redditor u/comedianmasta, declared that they had actually "won DND" by giving "enough rope for the players to show how to hang yourself with." Comedianmasta went on to argue that they handled the situation in the best possible manner for a DM. "You didn't take it personally, you allowed it to go forward, and BOOM! The players feel smart, and YOU have the credit of one of the most memorable moments in their gaming history." In the 20 hours since the post's creation, this comment has gained over 3k likes from members of the Reddit community.

Dungeons & Dragons often presents golden opportunities for players to demonstrate resourcefulness and ingenuity. During an Alice in Wonderland-style homebrew campaign, a group of D&D players defeated an evil mage by opening his head with a magic doorknob and filling his cranium with garlic bread and maracas. Another party used the Reverse Gravity spell to vanquish an ancient Dracolich by forcing it out of its bubble of magical protection. Many campaigns also allow the DM's creativity to shine: One DM, who goes by MasonCBlevins on Reddit, created an "Unluckiness" mechanic inspired by one player's notorious propensity for misfortune. This mechanic compels monsters within a 30 ft range of the player to reroll with an additional -5, making it appear as if the player's bad luck is spreading to the group's enemies.
