Disenchantment Finally Spotlights One of its Most Underrated Characters
The final season of Matt Groening's Disenchantment on Netflix finally spotlights one of the show's most underrated characters, Mop Girl.
The fifth and final season of the animated fantasy series Disenchantment, created by the mind behind the Simpsons, was released on Netflix, marking the culmination of Queen Bean's and her friends Elfo and Luci's misadventures. This concluding season unfolds with an epic final battle, requiring Bean's confrontation with her mother, Queen Dagmar, who has taken over Dreamland. However, even though this trio of misfits has been the show's central focus, one character is finally getting the recognition she deserves: Mop Girl.
Disenchantment is just one of the projects that Matt Groening has co-created alongside David X. Cohen, which includes Futurama. Therefore, it isn't surprising that the two shows now seem to coexist in the same universe. The latest season presents many challenges for Bean and her crew, which also involves Bean's departure for Steamland with her mermaid girlfriend, Mora, to save her father, King Zog. This situation presents a unique opportunity for Mop Girl, who helps keep the body of Evil Bean away from Queen Dagmar and works towards saving the kingdom from her evil grasp.
Disenchantment's Mop Girl is the Face of Unconventional Heroism
Throughout most of this Netflix series, this character was only referred to as Mop Girl. However, this season, she finally confirms her name, Miri, and reveals her mixed pointy-eared heritage. Despite being a background character for much of the show, Miri cleverly utilizes this to her advantage, crafting it into a strategy against Queen Dagmar. In Season 5, Episode 6, "The Stience of Homemade Lightening," Elfo encourages Miri to rally Dreamland's citizens and magical creatures to work together and form a rebellion. Miri takes up the challenge, pointing out that her relative anonymity, earned from silently scrubbing the nooks and crannies of Dreamland, will become an instrumental tool in their plan.
Building on this, she emphasizes that their victory won't come from brash attacks and battle cries but from hiding in the shadows, a skill she learned while being ignored and perceived as invisible. This speaks towards one of the central themes across Matt Groening's shows, which is about the working class finding purpose and joy in their struggle against the upper class. In this context, Miri represents the working class, rallying people to stand against their oppressors. Her unconventional heroism shines through as she demonstrates her bravery and resourcefulness through silent acts in the face of an overwhelming force.
Disenchantment's Mop Girl Evolves From Comic Relief to Royalty
This season may mark the end of Disenchantment, but it's worth noting that the series finally succeeded in bringing attention to Mop Girl and even elevating her from a mere source of comic relief to a significant character. Miri is typically known for her attachment to her mop, likely the origin of her nickname, and serves as a running gag on the show. Her whimsical and slapstick humor, coupled with her knack for remaining in the background while providing witty commentary on evolving events, made her a distinctive character. Even when thrust into absurd situations, she delivered her lines with a deadpan expression, creating an amusing contrast between her demeanor and the surrounding chaos.
Miri also appears to possess the magical ability to control mops and brooms, often leading to comical mishaps. These elements characterize Miri's humor and role in the series. However, a significant transformation occurs in Season 5, Episode 10, "Goodbye Bean," where she is crowned Queen of Dreamland in recognition of her contributions to defeating Dagmar. This elevation of her character, previously viewed as invisible and inconsequential, highlights the notion that even background characters can exert significant influence. These events serve as a testament to how Disenchantment had long overlooked Miri by leaving her in the background, but this transformation has finally granted her the recognition she rightfully deserves.
