Five Nights at Freddy’s Director Hypes Up Josh Hutcherson’s Performance

Five Nights at Freddy’s director Emma Tammi praises Josh Hutcherson’s leading performance as Mike Schmidt in the upcoming Blumhouse movie.


Five Nights at Freddy’s director Emma Tammi opened up about Josh Hutcherson’s casting in the upcoming supernatural thriller movie.


In an interview with EW, Tammi shared that The Hunger Games vet had already been an early favorite during the early stages of the “intensive” casting process for the lead role in Blumhouse’s long-awaited film adaptation of the hit horror video game. "We went through an intensive process for this role, because he really anchors the whole film," she recalled. "I talked to Josh early on, and we just kept coming back to him.” The role of the security night guard ultimately went to Hutcherson, who Tammi praised for having "such a grasp for the character and gave Mike a real lived-in feeling, which was what the character needed. I'm excited for people to see Josh in a slightly new light."


Tammi directed the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie from a screenplay written by game creator Scott Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback. The possessed animatronics of Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Foxy, Bonnie, and Springtrap were created by the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Before production on Five Nights at Freddy’s began last Feb. 2023, the project had to go through a very lengthy development process due to multiple pre-production setbacks. The movie only started making progress in 2021, after Blumhouse acquired the film rights to the video game.


What to Expect in the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie?


Like the premise of the original games, the R-rated film adaptation will center around a young security guard taking on the night shift duty at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. Unbeknownst to the character, his seemingly easy job comes with terrifying consequences. According to the film synopsis for Five Nights at Freddy’s, Hutcherson’s Mike Schmidt will desperately agree to a night-shift guard duty in order to get the cash he needs to retain the custody of his younger sister Abby. Mike’s nights will soon be filled with unexplainable encounters and unspeakable nightmares, while he slowly finds the truth behind the evil entities haunting the abandoned restaurant.
