How Star Wars Failed Heroic Clone Commander Thorn

Commander Thorn was a promising Clone Commander, but unfortunately Star Wars made a huge mistake of never picking up on his full potential.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars featured numerous promising Clone Commanders such as Commander Wolffe and Commander Cody. With executive producer George Lucas, The Clone Wars took a closer look at the underappreciated clones in the Star Wars universe, providing fans with a refreshing alternative to the excess amount of on-screen Jedi. One Clone Commander struck fans as especially interesting and quickly became a promising figure before The Clone Wars sadly ended his character in the same episode.

Clone Commander Thorn's Star Wars legacy lived on and his iconic final scene was still thrilling and heartbreaking in the years that followed the end of The Clone Wars. As the series had a huge rewatch potential, fans were wondering if the series might have benefited from letting Commander Thorn stick around a bit longer.

Who was Clone Commander Thorn in Star Wars: The Clone Wars?

The Clone Wars introduced Clone Commander Thorn in Season 6, Episode 7, ''Crisis at the Heart''. Clone Commander Thorn sadly only appeared in this episode, but definitely made a strong impression. He wore a unique Phase II Clone Trooper armor that had red patterns to identify himself as the Coruscant Guard. Commander Thorn did not only stick out through his stylish helmet patterns and armor, his signature weapon was a Z-6 rotary blaster cannon that his enemies only knew as ''The Hammer''. Not many clones had weapons with fear-inducing names, and if they did, they would probably not be as cool as Commander Thorn's death-bringing blaster cannon. Besides his equipment, Commander Thorn exemplified great leadership and heroism that many clones should have adopted, especially during his first, and last, mission on-screen in The Clone Wars.

During his mission in The Clone Wars, Commander Thorn was tasked with keeping Senator Padmé Amidala and Rush Clovis safe while visiting Scipio where the InterGalactic Banking Clan's vaults resided. Unfortunately for Padmé, their mission of diplomacy was cut short when Clovis took leadership of the InterGalactic Banking Clan and the Separatists, led by Count Dooku, forced Clovis to charge higher interest rates for the Republic. Even more unfortunate was the situation that followed; an invasion of Scipio by Separatist troops. While Commander Thorn's men were brutally murdered, Thorn heroically fought back. This moment in The Clone Wars reminded fans of Wrecker, the brutish clone that was later introduced in Season 7 as part of Clone Force 99. Sadly though, Commander Thorn never made it into Season 7, as he died during this battle.

Star Wars Failed Commander Thorn

Fans may have speculated that Commander Thorn would have never made for an exciting character, while his death exemplified the exact opposite. Commander Thorn's death was one of the most heartbreaking clone moments in Star Wars, as he heroically fought until the end, taking on as many droids as he could. Star Wars could have surely given Commander Thorn more opportunities to prove his potential. His armor, rotary cannon and tenacious attitude were wasted in the story of The Clone Wars, as the series fell short on expanding the lore surrounding his character.

Commander Thorn was an extraordinary Clone Commander and only a few could have matched his die-hard persona. The Clone Wars failed his character, robbing fans of experiencing more of this heroism. Especially exciting would have been seeing him during the aftermath of Order 66, either joining forces with Clone Force 99 and Captain Rex, or becoming a deadly asset for the Dark Side.
