Marvel's Avengers is a third-person, action-adventure game that combines an original, cinematic story with single-player and cooperative gameplay. The game allows players to assemble a team of up to four players online, master extraordinary abilities, customize an expansive roster of Heroes, and defend the Earth from escalating threats. Marvel's Avengers promises to deliver "The definitive Avengers gaming experience with an adventure that sends out heroes from space to the hidden kingdom of Wakanda, or an apocalyptic alternative future."


A description for Marvel's Avengers reads, "Marvel's Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a new, hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. The celebration turns deadly when a mysterious enemy causes a catastrophic accident, which results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, a sprawling adventure ignites when a determined young woman named Kamala Khan sets out to reassemble and rebuild the Avengers to stop the unchecked power of the secretive new force known as AIM."


Creative director Cezar Virtosu, who worked on the Crystal Dynamic Marvel's Avengers game through an outsourcing studio called Virtuous, expressed his personal view on why the game did poorly and was not well received. Virtosu claimed the developers faced difficulties throughout the game's production. The Creative director, however, did not reveal the specific challenges faced by the team.


Crystal Dynamics released Marvel's Avengers in 2020 as a third-person superhero action RPG focusing on online cooperation and a loot-based reward system. The game follows the titular team of Marvel superheroes as they battle against the forces of the corrupt mega-corporation Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM). Following its release, Marvel's Avengers received a lukewarm reception from players. Fans and critics lauded the engaging narrative but were less enthused with the game's repetitive gameplay, uninspired environmental design, and abundant microtransactions.


Marvel's Avengers - The Definitive Edition will no longer be available on digital storefronts after September 30, 2023.
