Michael Cera to Star in Wes Anderson's Next Movie

Wes Anderson says he's been wanting to work with Barbie standout Michael Cera for close to 20 years.

Asteroid City helmer Wes Anderson shared some details about his next feature film, and that comes with the confirmation that it will star Michael Cera.

Anderson is currently preparing for the release of his short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which hits Netflix on Sept. 20. While speaking about the short and other projects with Deadline, the revered filmmaker shed some light on his next feature-length movie. He revealed that he'd just completed a new screenplay co-written with Roman Coppola right before the Writer's Guild of America strike began. Production is planned to begin when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes come to an end.

With that noted, Anderson divulged that Benicio Del Toro appears in a main role. When asked if there were any other actors he'd always wanted to work with but hadn't yet, Anderson also mentioned that Cera was cast in the film alongside Del Toro, citing the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star as someone he'd been wanting to cast for nearly two decades.

"Well, you know, we have Michael Cera," Anderson said. "He’s one of the other characters in this new story. And he’s somebody I probably met, I think, close to 20 years ago. At least 18 years ago, something like that. I met him with Harvey Keitel, so it must have been 2008 or something. But, anyway, Michael Cera. That’s one."

Wes Anderson Dives Into Roald Dahl Stories at Netflix

Anderson refused to say the title of the movie, nor was he willing to provide any further teases beyond its cast members. Of course, Anderson is known for assembling star-studded casts together for his movies, so there may be many other fan favorite actors who will join the film with Del Toro and Cera. In any case, Anderson will first release a slew of short films on Netflix based on Roald Dahl stories, starting with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Cera, meanwhile, has been the man of the hour following his standout performance in Barbie as Allan, Ken's overlooked best friend. Additionally, he voiced a role in the new animated series Praise Petey, which premiered on Freeform the same day Barbie hit theaters. It was also recently announced that Cera will be reprising his titular role in the upcoming anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The actor will next be seen on the big screen on Nov. 10 as one of the stars of Dream Scenario, a comedy that co-stars Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson, and Tim Meadows.
