RUMOR: What If…? Season 2 to Feature a Happy Hogan-Led Christmas Episode
Marvel Studios’ What If…? Season 2 will reportedly include a Christmas episode centering around Jon Favreau’s long-time MCU character Happy Hogan.
Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan will reportedly have his own solo episode on Disney+’s forthcoming What If…? Season 2.
It has already been 15 years since Happy Hogan had first made his live-action debut in 2008’s Iron Man movie, where he appeared as Tony Stark’s bodyguard/ chauffeur. It seems like the fan-favorite supporting character is finally getting his spotlight in the next installment of Marvel Studios’ animated anthology series. According to industry scooper CanWeGetSomeToast on X, What If…? Season 2 reportedly has a holiday episode titled "What If…Happy Hogan Saved Christman?," which would be ideal for the show since its scheduled return date falls in December 2023, "around Christmas."
During What If…? Season 1, Happy appeared in two episodes including "What If…Zombies?" and "What If…Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?," in which Favreau was able to reprise his long-time role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's currently unclear whether Favreau would still lend his voice in Season 2, since Marvel Studios hasn’t been able to reveal the official cast yet. Besides starring with Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man movies, Favreau also served as the director and executive producer for its first two installments. He continued to play Happy in four more MCU movies including 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Marvel Studios’ What If…? series hails from head writer AC Bradley and director Bryan Andrews. Based on Marvel Comics’ comic book anthology series from 1977, the animated adaptation explores alternate timelines within the MCU multiverse, with Season 1 inspired by the stories told during The Infinity Saga. It features the voice of Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright as the narrator called the Watcher, an extraterrestrial being tasked to only observe the multiverse, and to not interfere with its events. Wright recently reprises the character in another Disney+ show in the form of I Am Groot Season 2.
What to Expect in What If…? Season 2?
The Season 1 finale saw the Watcher breaking his vow to never interfere with the multiverse after he’s forced to take on Ultron, who was able to gain self-awareness of the existence of the multiverses. To stop Ultron from destroying the multiverse, the Watcher assembled the Guardians of the Multiverse, consisting of Captain Carter, Strange Supreme, Star-Lord T’Challa, Party Thor, Killmonger, and Gamora. As for What If…? Season 2, it has been confirmed that it will be adapting stories and characters from the MCU’s Phase 3 and 4.
In a previous interview, Andrews promised fans to expect "more unique" and "wilder" stories in Season 2. "We have different characters that we haven’t really got a chance to play with before, and we see how they’ll integrate with some of the favorites that come back. There's lots of really cool stuff and I can't wait for people to see it." The characters who will appear in the next installment are Captain Carter, Hela, Ego, Black Widow, Steve Rogers, Iron Man, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, and Strange Supreme, with Cate Blanchett reprising her iconic Thor: Ragnarok character.
While waiting for What If…? Season 2 to debut later this year, fans can now watch the first nine episodes of the animated MCU series on Disney+.
