The Complete Guide to All Things Steve Harrington

Steve Harrington's hilarious comebacks and amazing character development turned him into people's favorite character from Stranger Things.

Steve Harrington (played by Joe Keery) is one of people's most beloved characters in Stranger Things. Even though Steve had a terrible personality in the first season, he soon redeemed himself when he teamed up with Dustin to fight some dangerous Demodogs. Steve went from a recurrent character in the first season to a main character in the following seasons of the show.

Steve went from a popular and selfish high school boy to a well-intentioned bimbo who is part of some of the best dynamics in Stranger Things. People especially love Steve's friendship with Dustin and Robin, and they are hoping he and Nancy will be endgame despite their turbulent past. Steve's kind yet clumsy personality has endeared the audience, and people can only hope the show will give Steve a happy ending in the fifth season of Stranger Things.

Who is Steve Harrington from Stranger Things?

Steve Harrington is one of the older teenagers in Stranger Things who gets involved in the mystery surrounding the town of Hawkins. Even though Steve starts as a recurrent character, he soon becomes part of the main cast in the second season. While Steve used to be a terrible boyfriend to Nancy and an antagonistic figure in the show, the character realizes his mistake and becomes an official part of the gang. Even though Steve and Nancy break up, he starts hanging out with Dustin, and later on, Steve and Robin get entangled in the many weird things happening in Hawkins.

In later seasons, Steve forms a great friendship with Dustin, and the two usually team up. In the third season, Steve started working in the ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy, where he met Robin Buckley, another Hawkins High School student who initially didn't like him. Even though it seemed like Steve and Robin would be a couple, the two characters became best friends, and one of the relationships from Stranger Things the fandom admires the most.

Who Plays Steve Harrington?

Joe Keery plays Steve Harrington, and it's the role that skyrocketed Keery's career, making him very popular among current audiences. Keery has been portraying Steve Harrington on Stranger Things since 2015, and he's set to reprise the role on the fifth and final season of the show, which will likely be released in 2025.

Since Joe Keery became a very popular actor thanks to his role in Stranger Things, he has appeared in other successful films such as the comedy movies Spree (2020) and Free Guy (2021). Keery also has a music career. He was a member of the band Post Animal and now releases music under the name Djo.

Steve Harrington's Age and Height

Stranger Things never establishes Steve Harrington's exact age or his birthday. However, when the show starts in 1983, Steve is apparently in his junior year of high school since the character graduates in 1985 (in the third season). This would mean that Steve is 16 or 17 years old in the first season and around 20 or 21 years old in the fourth season of Stranger Things, making him one of the older members of the gang.

Since Steve Harrington is one of the tallest people in the Stranger Things gang, many wonder what this character's height is. Steve Harrington is played by actor Joe Keery, which means that this character's height is 5'11'' (180 cm), which is unsurprising since he's always towering over the other characters.

Are Steve and Nancy Together in Stranger Things?

While Steve and Nancy were dating in the first season of Stranger Things, this relationship ended due to Steve's terrible attitude in the show's first season and Nancy's developing feelings for Jonathan Byers. Nancy then initiated a romantic relationship with Jonathan when they spent time together investigating Hawkins's mysterious events.

However, in the fourth season of Stranger Things, there were several moments where it seemed that Nancy and Steve may have feelings for each other. Even though Nancy is still dating Jonathan, their relationship suffers from a distance after Jonathan moves to California. Not many people love this love triangle, but they're rooting for Nancy and Steve to end up together. Only the fifth season of Stranger Things can say if Nancy will end up with Steve or Jonathan.

Steve and Dustin's Friendship

Steve and Dustin's friendship is one of the best relationships in Stranger Things and all television. In the show's second, the two characters start to hang out together after Steve helps Dustin with a Demodog. From then on, Dustin and Steve have an old-brother and little-brother dynamic that has amused and endeared most of the audience. Steve and Dustin often team up throughout the series, and people love these episodes the most.

People especially like Dustin and Steve because they're constantly bickering, and their interactions are hilarious, but they also care deeply for each other. The relationship is also funny because, even though Steve is around five years older than Dustin, Dustin is clearly smarter and often puts Steve in his place. There's nothing better than seeing Steve constantly humbled by a little kid.

Did Steve Die in Stranger Things?

Even though Stranger Things constantly kills off some of the show's most beloved characters, fortunately, Steve Harrington is alive and well (so far). However, fans would be surprised to know that, at some point, writers considered killing Steve in the show's first season, as told by showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer in an interview (via Stranger Things). The show certainly wouldn't be the same without Steve's jokes and wholesome dynamics.

Furthermore, many people thought Steve would die in the fourth season of Stranger Things. The character got badly bitten by several Demobats, and it looked terrible for Steve, who was bleeding and could have gotten an infectious disease from the horrifying creatures. Hopefully, Steve will survive the show's fifth season since he's such a fan-favorite character (although this didn't protect Eddie Munson).
