Kate McKinnon's Weird Barbie Gets Official Doll From Mattel

Mattel unveils the upcoming launch of its newest Barbie doll based on Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie from Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster movie.

Barbie movie fans won’t have to play with their dolls too hard in order to get their very own Weird Barbie, as Mattel officially announces the launch of a new doll inspired by Kate McKinnon’s fan-favorite character.

The official Weird Barbie doll will be sporting the same pink dress and signature spiky hair that McKinnon wore during her character introduction scene in Greta Gerwig’s live-action adaptation. In addition to the crayon-drawn facial markings, Mattel’s new doll will also be able to do splits like her movie counterpart. The Weird Barbie doll will be available for pre-order starting on Aug. 18 for the retail price of $50. It will officially be released on or before May 2024, after nearly a year since the character made its live-action debut.

Even though the Barbie movie was McKinnon and Gerwig’s first ever movie together, it wasn’t exactly their collaboration since the pair’s friendship started when they were both students at Columbia University. In a previous interview, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker revealed that they made “wonderfully strange musicals” together during college. "We were in an improv group together. She was much better, better at it than I was," Gerwig recalled. "We were just 19, making a weird musical together and thinking like, 'I hope someone will wanna work with us one day.' Then cut to 39 and to just be calling her and saying, 'Do you wanna be in this big thing?'"

Greta Gerwig’s Personal Connection with Weird Barbie

Gerwig revealed that one of her inspirations for McKinnon’s Weird Barbie look stemmed from a childhood experience of playing "hand-me-down Barbies that had already gotten a haircut by the time I [she] got them." She also cited Lois Lowry’s The Giver novel as an inspiration for developing Weird Barbie’s character as someone who gives "the knowledge that everyone else didn’t have." As for the character’s memorable dollhouse, production designer Sarah Greenwood revealed that she modeled it after one of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic movies. "One of my early references is that you go up the stairs, and there’s the Psycho house, and we brought in other elements... its design was deliberately skewed with everything pushed out of shape and out of order."

In addition to directing, Gerwig also co-wrote the live-action Barbie movie with partner Noah Baumbach. The film is led by Margot Robbie as a stereotypical Barbie who starts experiencing strange things including developing thoughts of death. In order to return to her normal self, she must embark on a journey to the real world. Joining Robbie are McKinnon, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, and more.

At the time of writing, Barbie is only days away from becoming a billion-dollar-grossing movie as it continues to dominate cinemas worldwide. The film’s box-office achievement was actually predicted by Robbie when she first pitched the project to Mattel.
