Ahsoka Needs To Bring Back This Mysterious Rebels Character
Star Wars: Rebels introduced a strange new character with a mysterious connection to the Force--and Ahsoka needs to bring him back.
Ahsoka has finally begun premiering on Disney+, giving audiences a new taste of what's to come in the future of the Star Wars franchise. The new limited series follows the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) as she teams up with the main cast of Star Wars: Rebels, including General Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) to combat a rising threat in the galaxy. The series also promises to reintroduce Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi)--drawing even more connections between itself and Rebels.
Ahsoka is a spiritual sequel to Star Wars: Rebels, bringing back many of the same characters, locations, and storylines from the animated series. The new Disney+ show directly seeks to answer the questions left behind by Rebels' shocking series finale, keeping the two Star Wars series inexplicably connected in viewers' eyes. As such, there is one mysterious character from the animated series' third season who deserves to make a return in future episodes of Ahsoka. The powerful being known as the Bendu was one of Rebels' most intriguing loose threads that can finally be explored in further depth as Ahsoka continues its rich storyline.
Who Was The Bendu in Star Wars: Rebels?
Upon his introduction the Bendu offered a different perspective of the Force in Star Wars. Kanan Jarrus first meets this mysterious entity on the planet Atollon during the events of "Steps Into Shadow," shortly after losing his vision in the previous episodes. Portrayed by Tom Baker, the Bendu immediately proved himself to be quite powerful with the Force, though he did not consider himself aligned with either the Light Side of the Dark Side. Instead, he claimed to be somewhere in between: the center of the Force. The Bendu worked alongside Kanan, training him to use the Force to replace his lost eyesight. Eventually, the Bendu also worked with Kanan's Padawan, Ezra Bridger, helping the two Jedi to see eye-to-eye once more after a period of hostility between the two.
The Bendu has some of the best scenes in Star Wars: Rebels as he displays his wisdom while training Kanan and Ezra. He also proves to be quite powerful whenever antagonized, as seen when Grand Admiral Thrawn and his Imperial armada attacked Atollon in order to destroy the Rebel base there. Thrawn drives the Rebel forces off the planet and believes he's found himself a prize in the Bendu, only for the mysterious creature to foretell the admiral's soon coming defeat. Losing his temper for the first time onscreen, Thrawn tries to shoot the Bendu, only for the creature to disappear into nothingness with a final mocking laugh. Eventually, Thrawn was defeated in the precise way that the Bendu foretold, proving his prediction completely correct.
How The Bendu Would Fit Into Ahsoka's Story
The Bendu could become an important teacher for Ahsoka Tano during the events of her Disney+ series, in much the same way that he was for Kanan and Ezra in Rebels. Historically, the Bendu has appeared to those who have lost their balance in the Force. After years of keeping to the shadows and resisting the title of Jedi, Ahsoka Tano is very much in search for balance. She has recognized that the difference between the Light Side and the Dark Side are not quite as clear-cut as some believe, but has yet to find the proper center. Bendu identifies with the center of the Force, choosing neither light nor dark. As such, he would be the perfect instructor to bring Ahsoka to a more balanced connection to the Force, one which has eluded the Jedi and the Sith for millennia.
Furthermore, the Bendu has a close connection to one of Ahsoka Tano's greatest enemies, Grand Admiral Thrawn, who will appear in the ongoing Disney+ series. The Bendu is one of the few characters who could actually unsettle Thrawn, who is famous for his level-headedness and strategic mind. Upon his return, Thrawn would certainly be interested in obliterating any person or creature that had witnessed his defeat--especially the one who predicted it. Having survived his defeat in the Star Wars: Rebels' finale, Thrawn may be on a warpath with the Bendu, leaving Ahsoka to defend him in the final episodes of her series.
Star Wars: Rebels introduced many new characters to the franchise who deserve to appear in future projects, not the least of which being the Bendu. This mysterious Force-wielder is one of the most intriguing additions to Star Wars in recent years, making his appearance in Ahsoka absolutely essential.
