Equalizer 3 Director Shares the Story Behind Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington Reunion

The Equalizer 3 director Antoine Fuqua spills the beans on Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning's relationship and how they reunited for the movie.

The Equalizer 3 director Antoine Fuqua opens up about how Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning reunited for another action-packed movie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fuqua was asked about who set up Fanning and Washington’s on-screen reunion in The Equalizer 3. The director responded, “It came from Dakota’s manager. She called Todd Black, the producer, and then Todd called me. So I had a meeting with Dakota, l loved her, and then I called Denzel to see how he felt. And he loved her, he loved the idea, and that’s how it all came about. It was exciting to see them come together.” The pair starred together in the late Tony Scott's Man on Fire in 2004. The Equalizer 3 makes Fuqua tied with Scott for the most collaborations with Washington at five movies.

Fuqua also opened up about the chemistry between Fanning and Washington by revealing that the pair of actors are friends and that Fanning is also close to the legendary actor’s children. He described witnessing the on-screen reunion as a good experience and said the pair launched, talked and Denzel gushed about how much the actress had grown up.

“You could definitely tell they had history. They’re also friends. She’s friends with Denzel’s kids as well, so you could see the love between them,” he said, continuing: “They would laugh and talk, and sometimes, he’d look over at me and say that he can’t believe she’s a grownup now. So it was a really good experience." Fuqua suggested in an interview their real-life connection translated into their on-screen chemistry in The Equalizer 3 – nearly two decades after Washington worked with a nine-year-old Fanning.

Denzel and Dakota Reunite for The Equalizer 3

In Scott's Man on Fire, Washington plays bodyguard John W. Creasy, who is a former CIA operative and seeks revenge when his client Lupita Ramos, played by Fanning, is kidnapped in Mexico City. Critics praised the chemistry between Washington and Fanning which left fans yearning for the pair to appear on screen together in a sequel which never came. Fanning takes a different role in The Equalizer 3 in which she plays a CIA analyst Emma Collins, who is tasked with helping Washington's Robert McCall to bring an end to the mafia in Sicily.

The Equalizer 3, which was released on September 1, is off to a good start as it made between $42 and 43.5 million on the Labor Day weekend, making it the second-best-ever opening for the holiday, behind the 2021 movie Shang-Chi. Washington revealed that The Equalizer 3 will bring an end to the successful franchise.

The Equalizer 3 is currently playing in theaters.
