Frasier Crew Discuss How the Revival Honors the Original Series

Co-showrunner of the Fraiser reboot, Joe Harris and director James Burrows explain how the relaunch will honor the original series.

Crew members from the Frasier revival break down how the upcoming relaunch will maintain the spirit of the original show.

James Burrows, who will be directing the first two episodes of the Frasier revival, told Entertainment Weekly about the parallels between the classic series and the new installment. "There's a lot of Martin in Freddy," Burrows said. He noted that was a conscious decision made by the showrunners, Joe Cristalli and Chris Harris. "Joe and Chris specifically wanted Frasier to deal with his son… because the relationship with Kelsey [Grammer] and [John] Mahoney was wonderful. So they tried to tap into that, and I think they succeeded."

Burrows went on to explain how the pilot of the Frasier revival honors the late John Mahoney, who played Martin in the original series. "It's a wonderful scene at the end of the show. It's about two-and-a-half, three minutes without any laughs. You've got to be brave to do that." Plus, Entertainment Weekly reported that the neighborhood bar featured in the revival will be called “Mahoney’s.”

The co-showrunner of the Frasier revival, Joe Harris, also explained how Kelsey Grammar's performance remains faithful to Frasier's character: “Anything we say, he knows what Frasier says and what Frasier doesn't say. He has no problem telling us, 'Frasier would never say this. Frasier would say...'"

Harris continued, "I'm a giant fan of the original. I've seen them all — I've seen them all a hundred times. Nobody knows that guy better than Kelsey does, and he has great instincts." He added, "This is not surprising; he knows what he's doing and he's very good at it."

The Return of Frasier Crane

Following Frasier's initial 11-season run, the relaunched show "follows Frasier Crane in the next chapter of his life as he returns to Boston with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfill." Alongside Kelsey Grammer, the cast includes Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy; Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.

Although Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Daphne (Jane Leeves) won't be returning for the Frasier reboot, the show will be bringing back Peri Gilpin as Roz Doyle and Bebe Neuwirth as Dr. Lilith Sternin.

Cheers and the original Frasier series are available to stream on Paramount+, and the revival is set to premiere on October 12.
