Paul Mescal Felt Starstruck Upon Meeting Gladiator 2 Co-Star Pedro Pascal

Paul Mescal reveals that when he first met Pedro Pascal, he was “too afraid to go up to him.”

Paul Mescal, who has had a meteoric rise to fame in the past few years, recently spoke about the whole experience.

The Gladiator 2 star discusses how honored he is for all the opportunities he’s received, and the privilege of working with great actors like Pedro Pascal. In an interview with Esquire, the Irish heartthrob talked about his recent experiences, such as becoming well-known for his performance on Normal People. Mescal opened up about adjusting to stardom, his Oscar nomination, and meeting his Gladiator 2 co-star, Pascal.

Just before Pascal’s involvement in Gladiator 2 was announced, Mescal ran into him at Los Angeles International Airport. “I was too afraid to go up to him,” Mescal revealed. “He came up and just seemed so genuine; I’m really looking forward to hanging out with him.”

Pascal first gained notoriety for his memorable, if short-lived, role as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones Season 4.

From there, he starred in the Netflix original Narcos as DEA Agent Javier Peña. He has since gone on to play the titular character in The Mandalorian on Disney+ and Joel on HBO’s adaptation of the video game, The Last of Us. Pascal’s other credits include Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent – in which Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself, and Pascal is a billionaire and superfan of the actor who pays Cage $1 million to attend his birthday party, The Equalizer 2, and he even appeared in an episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer when he was younger.

Paul Mescal Is on the Rise

Mescal, on the other hand, is a much newer name to Hollywood. His breakout performance as Connel Waldron on Normal People earned him a BAFTA TV Award and a nomination for a Primetime Emmy. Since then, he has soared as one of the most popular male actors of his generation – matched only by the likes of Timothée Chalamet. He was shortlisted for an Academy Award for his role in Aftersun – he played Callum, the troubled young father of the protagonist, and will appear across from Saoirse Ronan in the upcoming Foe (set to release October 6th)

Mescal and Pascal, with their wonderfully rhyming names, are both involved in the much-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. The original film follows Russel Crowe as Maximus in a performance that earned him an Oscar for Best Actor. Mescal was confirmed as the lead of Gladiator 2 way back in January 2023. Since then, he flew off to Malta to begin shooting alongside Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Djimon Hounsou. The production of Gladiator 2 had to be stopped due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Other projects affected by this were Deadpool 3, Venom 3, Beetlejuice 2, the film version of Wicked, Paddington in Peru, and the final season of Stranger Things.
