Saw X Director Addresses the Future of the Horror Franchise
Saw X helmer Kevin Greutert shared his thoughts on a potential Saw 11 and beyond.
While Saw X will likely not be getting a direct sequel, the director of the tenth installment of the Saw series still believes the popular horror franchise will continue.
Set to hit theaters on Sept. 29, Saw X goes back to the roots of the franchise, as it's a prequel set in between the first and second movies. That allowed for Tobin Bell to return once again as John "Jigsaw" Kramer. It also essentially makes Saw II serve as the follow-up to Saw X, and for director Kevin Greutert, that also makes it unnecessary for his new film to get a sequel. Speaking with SFX Magazine (per GamesRadar), Greutert explained how Saw X is a standalone film with no "obvious" idea for a sequel, but if the film makes money, the movie series will still likely continue on.
"There’s no obvious new direction to go after this film. But I think there probably will be more Saw movies, particularly if this one is successful," Greutert said. "I truly believe that this is the most standalone Saw film since the first one. It’s not about knowing or remembering anything about the previous films. It’s a richer experience if you know about Saw because otherwise you won’t necessarily know who Amanda is when she appears, but it’s very clear from the beginning what’s happening."
Saw X Doesn't Set Up a Sequel
Greutert is referring to Amanda Young, a Jigsaw apprentice played by Shawnee Smith. It was confirmed previously that Smith is back as Amanda for Saw X, but Greutert also teased that there are other "surprises" for fans in the film. While not naming specifically any other characters or references, the director notes how the film builds "more on what's in the past," as opposed to planting seeds for a future installment.
With Greutert directing, Saw X was written by Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. The film follows Tobin Bell's John Kramer as he heads to Mexico for an experimental medical procedure with the hopes of curing his terminal cancer, only to find he's been defrauded. Those responsible then find out that they've chosen the wrong person to scam. Along with Bell and Shawnee Smith, the film stars Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Michael Beach, and Renata Vaca.
Saw X will be released in movie theaters on Sept. 29, 2023.
