The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Wasn’t Originally Set in France

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon producer Greg Nicotero reveals the original location and story for the upcoming spinoff.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon producer Greg Nicotero confirmed that the upcoming Norman Reedus spinoff wasn’t originally going to take place outside the U.S.

In an interview with EW, Nicotero opened up about the initial plans for the Daryl Dixon series, revealing that The Walking Dead spinoff would have originally featured the fan-favorite character traveling to the Midwest. "It was going to be Daryl going across the country like through New Mexico or the Midwest," he said. "And it was kind of like a Then Came Bronson or The Fugitive or Kung Fu — a stranger in a strange land. In every episode, he would come in contact with people that would change his life, and he would change their life. And that was where this whole show stemmed from. It was something that Norman was super passionate about."

Following the series finale of The Walking Dead last Nov. 2022, fans will get the chance to explore a whole new side to the post-apocalyptic world of the long-running horror franchise, as the upcoming spinoff brings Daryl Dixon to Europe. In the new series, the titular character finds himself far away from home, after he unexpectedly wakes up in France with no memory of how he got there. Daryl must navigate his way through an unfamiliar environment where he’ll encounter potential allies and new kinds of threats while trying to find a way back home.

Daryl Dixon Has a Mission

As seen in previous trailers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, it has been confirmed that Daryl’s journey includes an important mission, where he’s tasked to accompany a young boy, who’s said to be the key to humanity’s survival. This plot detail is definitely reminiscent of The Last of Us Season 1, where Pedro Pascal’s Joel must deliver Bella Ramsey’s Ellie to the people who believe that her immunity to the infection will be the key to the cure. Nicotero addressed the two shows’ plot similarities, assuring Walking Dead fans that Daryl will have a different character journey from Joel since they don’t have the same purpose.

In a previous interview, Reedus teased Daryl’s growth in the upcoming spinoff, expressing how excited he is for the chance to get to try something new after years of doing the same storylines. "I feel like we're not cranking it out for numbers on a Sunday night," he said. "We're making art, and there's moving dialogue. It's a different animal, and it's beautiful, it's touching, and it's sort of amazing to look at and listen to and watch and feel."

Daryl Dixon will also introduce new characters to AMC’s long-running horror franchise including Harry Potter's Clémence Poésy as Isabelle, Chernobyl star Adam Nagaitis as Quinn, Transporter 3's Eriq Ebouaney as Fallou, and Paid’s Anne Charrier as Genet. Besides Reedus, the spinoff will also feature another The Walking Dead favorite in the form of Melissa McBride as she reprises her role as Carol. The series has already been renewed for a second season, which will continue its production in Europe after AMC secured an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
