Zendaya Plots Villain Role for Future Project

Spider-Man and Dune star Zendaya teases fans, talking up the possibility of shifting towards a "villain of sorts" role for a future project.

Zendaya has done vulnerable and heroine, now hoping to add "villain" to her list of characters.

Alongside teasing an interest in directing, Zendaya revealed to Elle Magazine that she wants to play the villain one day. "I would love to play a villain of sorts. Tap into that evil, supervillain vibes," she says. "Whatever that manifests in, I don’t think necessarily in a superhero sense but in an emotional sense. I feel like I usually play the good guy, so I’d like to play the bad guy.”

A superpowered Zendaya was once on the cards, chartering a vastly different possible path for the actor. "I leave the superhero-ing to this one," she said about Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland. "I'm actually really happy with MJ, and the character that she is and that she plays. They're there for each other, and they support each other, so I'm totally fine with being part of a team." Testing this out in the early revisions of the film, the recently released Spider-Man: No Way Home - The Art of the Movie artbook revealed images and descriptions of scrapped ideas and notably included Zendaya's MJ in Doctor Strange's Cloak of Levitation.

Zendaya Plays Someone More "Villain-Esque" in Challengers

The upcoming film Challengers adds to Zendaya's list of archetypes. While not quite an ideal villain, "that’s what was so fun, right?" she says about her character Tashi Donaldson. "I hate to say villain, but there’s a villain-esque quality there to all of the characters. And I think that was fun." Tashi is the former tennis player-turned-coach after a career-ending injury. With her support, her onscreen husband (Mike Faist) becomes a world champion, with their relationship growing "terrible" and "horrific" after she enrolls him in a tournament that contains a former lover. Zendaya teases the dynamic with, "Who’s the bad guy? Who’s the good guy? And it changes every time. You can come back and see people from a different perspective, which I think is the point of what we do, you know?"

Zendaya balances her villain-esque appearance in Challengers with taking the side of the Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides in Dune. Both were delayed to 2024. A recent interview with Euphoria director Sam Levinson suggests that Zendaya's portrayal of the character Rue may take place in a much darker world, describing the new season as "film noir."
