Deadpool 3 Is Set to Be the Franchise's Most Meta Installment Yet

Set photos from Deadpool 3 show a surprising setting for a fight between Wade and Wolverine, featuring the franchise's biggest fourth wall break yet.

Early images from Deadpool 3 have teased just how far the Merc With a Mouth is about to push his fourth-wall-breaking tendencies. The Deadpool movies have always been heavy on irreverent humor, but Wade Wilson's most distinctive comedic trait is his ability to realize he is a fictional character in a comic book movie. While the first two entries in the franchise saw Wade making plenty of references to 20th Century Fox and the nature of superhero movies, Deadpool 3 looks set to go even further in breaking the boundary between fiction and reality.

The third Deadpool film will officially bring the franchise under the Marvel Studios banner, following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios), paving the way for Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First, though, he will have to sever ties with Fox's Marvel Universe. Fans had been curious about how (or even if) Deadpool 3 would address the move from Fox to Marvel. Now, leaked set photos have confirmed the changes going on behind the scenes will factor into Deadpool 3's story in a big way.

Deadpool Kills Fox's Marvel Universe

An early set photo from Deadpool 3 was officially released on social media by the stars of the film, revealing Hugh Jackman's new comics-accurate Wolverine costume. It appears likely the decision was made to release the image officially because the studio was already anticipating photos leaking from the day's shooting on a large, open lot. When more images did indeed surface online though, they revealed a little more than Wolverine's new look, showing the surprising backdrop for a fight between Wolverine and Deadpool.

The leaked images offered a glimpse of a huge, crumbling 20th Century Fox logo. While it's not exactly clear how it factors into the scene or the overall story of the film, it wouldn't be a huge leap to assume this is a sign that Deadpool is getting ready to leave his old cinematic universe and doesn't intend to leave any survivors on his way out. The film's depiction of a literal destruction of 20th Century Fox -- whether the crumbling logo is part of a scene featuring an attack on Fox's actual movie studios, or a more abstract collapse of the Fox Marvel universe -- is probably Deadpool's most meta moment yet.

Deadpool 3's Set Photos May Tease Its Comic Influences

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding how Deadpool 3 might handle the matter of Deadpool jumping universes. Given Deadpool's casual disregard for the barrier between fiction and reality, it was entirely possible the upcoming threequel would quickly gloss over the fact Wade Wilson was now in a new cinematic universe with a couple of throwaway gags. It was equally likely, though, that the film would address the change in a far more direct way than other superhero movies could; the comics even offered up a handy precedent for Deadpool ridding himself of his own universe.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe was a comic that delivered exactly what the title promised. Set on Earth-12101, the series saw Deadpool setting out to kill the entirety of the Marvel Universe's heroes and succeeding in doing so. The series ends with Deadpool traveling through the Nexus of All Realities to kill the writers of the comic. Based on the new set photos, it's entirely possible Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool could pull a similar move in Deadpool 3, traveling between realities to destroy 20th Century Fox, not only ending his original universe but also the real-world movie studio that created it. Such a move would take Deadpool's meta-storytelling to a whole new level to usher him into the MCU.
