Indiana Jones 5 Star Explains How Indy's Reunion With [Spoiler] Happened
An Indiana Jones legacy cast member unpacks their character's unexpected return to the franchise during Dial of Destiny's epilogue.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Karen Allen recently explained how Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) engineered the movie's reunion between her character, Marion Ravenwood, and Indy (Harrison Ford).
Allen discussed Marion's surprise cameo during Dial of Destiny's epilogue in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "Probably all that Marion needed to know is that he was still very much mourning the loss of the relationship," she said. "There's that moment in the film where Indy tells Helena about [his and Marion's son] Mutt being killed, and so she probably just said, 'Please come see him. He needs you. He's not the same man.' We don't know entirely what's driven them apart. It appears that his way of dealing with the grief was to drink too much and go into a very internal place, but we don't really know exactly how Marion grieved the loss."
"Whatever it was, it wasn't something that drew them closer together, and it seemed that they needed time apart," Allen continued. "In the beginning, we see the separation agreement papers just long enough to know that it's moving in that direction, but we don't see them long enough to fill in any details." In the same interview, Allen admitted that she was initially "disappointed" about the size of Marion's role in Dial of Destiny, especially since the fan-favorite character was a bigger part of previous drafts of the screenplay. Allen added that she was ultimately "really happy" to see Marion and Indiana Jones reunited, however.
Indiana Jones 5 Star On Lucas and Spielberg's Absence
Allen also touched on the absence of original Indiana Jones creative architects George Lucas and Steven Spielberg during production on Dial of Destiny, saying she "really missed them." The star recalled how she expected to reconnect with Lucas, Spielberg and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy while taking part in costume fittings in London, only to find that the trio weren't on hand. That said, Allen confirmed that she soon formed a positive working relationship with Dial of Destiny director James Mangold, whom she said made her feel "so welcome" during her two days of filming.
Allen wasn't the only one impressed with Mangold, either. Spielberg himself praised his successor's efforts in the director's chair prior to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's release, describing the sequel as "really, really a good Indiana Jones film."
