Kyoto Animation to Stream Fourth Anniversary Memorial

On the fourth anniversary of the KyoAni fire, Kyoto Animation will stream a memorial video to honor the victims who died on July 18, 2019.

Kyoto Animation will hold its memorial for the fourth anniversary of the KyoAni fire.

As seen in Jさん (@/soukatsu_)'s tweet, Kyoto Animation revealed details on the memorial to honor the lives lost in the KyoAni arson four years ago. Originally, the studio planned for an in-person memorial on July 18, but made the decision to keep it online "with everyone's safety in mind and to prevent any confusion regarding the premises of the 1st Studio and our Company." The memorial video will stream on YouTube as it did the year prior. The video will be streamed worldwide on July 18 from 10:30 AM to 10:40 AM JST with a moment of silence at 10:35 AM. The memorial video will be made available throughout July 18.

The notice described additional details, including asking fans to not visit the premises of the 1st Studio and its surrounding areas at all. The studio also requested that fans not send any flowers or monetary condolence gifts. "Although it has been four years since the tragic incident at our 1st Studio, our grief has not yet healed," the notice read. "However, the unwavering support from our fans has propelled us forward, enabling us to continue producing animation works. We sincerely thank each and every one of you for this support, as without it, we would not be where we are today."

On the morning of July 18, 2019, a 41-year-old man named Shinji Aoba walked into KyoAni's 1st studio and set the building on fire with 40 liters of gasoline. The fire killed 36 people and injured 34, including the perpetrator. The perpetrator alleged that Kyoto Animation had plagiarized one of his novels, but police investigations revealed those claims were not true. After pre-trial proceedings began on May 8, Aoba will face the court for the first time on Sept. 5. A verdict is expected to be delivered in January 2024.

KyoAni originally wanted to build a memorial site to honor the victims but decided against it after residents of the neighborhood voiced their worries that this would disrupt "the peaceful lifestyle." In May 2023, the studio announced its intention to build two memorial sites with one being accessible to the public and the other at the site where the attack took place but built within the business facilities. A memorial video has been streamed every year since 2020.

The fourth-anniversary memorial video will stream on July 18 on the official KyoAni YouTube channel.
