Ahsoka Hints at More Than Just the Eye of Sion Being Built

Morgan Elsbeth stole equipment to build the Eye of Sion, but the third episode of Ahsoka hints not all of it went to the megastructure.

The Eye of Sion is a huge capital ship in Ahsoka, one that takes the form of a hyperspace docking ring from the days of the Jedi. It requires an immense amount of materials to be built, and it of course needs several hyperdrives to get to the new galaxy, Peridea. Morgan Elsbeth managed to steal these hyperdrives from right under the New Republic's nose, using Imperial loyalists working at the Corellian Shipyards to take nine hyperdrives that were broken down from Imperial Super Star Destroyers (SSD).

But the third episode of Ahsoka reveals that only seven of these nine hyperdrives were used in the construction of the Eye of Sion, three on each side and one on the bottom. Two SSD hyperdrives have been left out of the behemoth's construction, kept in reserve for something else. The true purpose of these spare hyperdrives will likely be revealed later in the show or even further down the line. Dave Filoni doesn't to put meaningless details onscreen. Given the current state of the Imperial Fleet and Morgan's past, she might use them to build ships for the Imperial Remnant.

Dave Filoni Has a Keen Eye for Detail in Star Wars

Ahsoka's creator, Dave Filoni, has always filled the shows he's worked on with important details whose importance is only revealed later on. In The Mandalorian, fans complained that Din Djarin's rule of not taking his helmet off in front of others broke Star Wars canon. But in the show's second season, this thread was revisited when Din encountered Bo-Katan Kryze, who revealed that only Mandalorian cultists refuse to take off their helmets. In Star Wars: Rebels, the episode that introduced the Purrgil was widely decried as filler, but now it's become an essential part of Star Wars lore. In this and other cases, Filoni knew what his plan was, and it just took patience for it to fully take shape.

This is likely the same case in Ahsoka. While mistakes can happen in shows, it's far more likely that it was always intended for Morgan to steal nine hyperdrives, but only need seven for the construction of the Eye of Sion. There are a lot more things that can be done with two hyperdrives than simply power one ship. Fans know that Ahsoka is helping to set up a future film in the franchise, meaning the hyperdrives are likely to come into play later on down the line.

Morgan Elsbeth Could be Rebuilding the Imperial Navy

The Imperial Remnant is in a bit of a tough spot. Due to their decreased size, they've been forced to resort to piracy along hyperroutes, plundering any resources they can get their hands on. The Shadow Council from The Mandalorian Season 3 highlights this equipment shortage, with Imperial members forced to share what little equipment they have, and building the Remnant up. Audiences know that the Imperial Remnant will become powerful enough to take on the New Republic, and part of this requires a strong navy. And this can begin in Ahsoka.

It's unclear what state Thrawn's 7th fleet is in, but as the purrgil violently ripped it to a new galaxy, it's likely to be very damaged. Thrawn will need a new fleet to take on the New Republic. Morgan Elsbeth has a background in building ships for the Empire. Now that the Eye of Sion is nearly complete Elsbeth could focus on building Star Destroyers, if this hasn't started already. These two unused hyperdrives could become part of new SSDs, ready to wreak havoc on the New Republic. This would put the Imperial Remnant in a stronger position, ready for their war. This is a process that audiences might start to see in Ahsoka and feed into the other Disney+ shows. It would also prove to citizens across the galaxy that the Imperial Remnant is something they can put their faith in.

Fans Will Have to Wait to See What Else Morgan Elsbeth is Building

While this small detail about the number of hyperdrives that Morgan Elsbeth has access to could end up having huge ramifications for the Star Wars galaxy, it's something that fans might have to wait to find out. Ahsoka is focused on telling the story of the search for Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra, it isn't looking at the wider Imperial Remnant or their efforts to retake the galaxy. The examples of Din's helmet removal and the purrgil's importance took time to be explained, and the mystery of the missing hyperdrives might likely take a similarly long time to be solved. Morgan may even be using these hyperdrives for something else even worse than SSDs.

Ahsoka herself has yet to realize this key detail. She and Hera were the ones who uncovered the treachery going on at the Corellian Shipyards and found out nine hyperdrives had been spirited away. Ahsoka has learned about the location of seven, but because she is occupied with avoiding Morgan's mercenaries the fact that two are unaccounted for is something Ahsoka has overlooked. It will come back to haunt the rest of the galaxy if she doesn't make this connection quickly. It makes the situation Ahsoka is facing even more desperate because it means that Ahsoka's enemies have more plans in motion than even she knows.

Ahsoka Will Begin a New Galactic Conflict

Star Wars has always hidden key details in plain sight. It's very unlikely that Filoni forgot the number of hyperdrives at play. He's always demonstrated that he has an eye on both the small and big things at play, and Ahsoka will be another instance where that's shown off. Especially because it's very easy to see where these hyperdrives could come back in either the show's future or in Filoni's upcoming movie.

The Imperial Remnant need to rebuild their fleet to be able to stand up to the New Republic, and there's no better way to start than by building two SSDs. It would allow Thrawn to take on much bigger New Republic fleets, meaning that he could display the raw tactical genius fans know and love him for. This would also help explain where a new Imperial fleet came from, because currently the Remnant only has a shadow of their former naval power at their disposal, but they will take on the New Republic soon.
