Netflix's One Piece Omits One of the Series' Most Underrated Groups

It's hard to bring everything over when adapting an expansive story like One Piece, but the Netflix show left out one of its most underrated groups.

Adapting a story into live-action comes with all sorts of challenges. Of course, the creative team has to make it appealing to fans of the property while still inviting others to join for the ride. Netflix's One Piece balances this splendidly, taking the things fans love about the series and putting a new spin on them to provide a fresh take. However, in doing so, it omits one of the series' most underrated groups.

When the crew arrives in Syrup Village looking for a ship, they meet the mighty Captain Usopp, who seems to be one of the community's most important members. Quickly, though, Usopp's ruse begins to unravel, and the Straw Hat Pirates learn he's known as the town fool. But what helped make Usopp so likable in the source material were the Usopp Pirates, who are nowhere to be found in the Netflix show.

How Netflix's One Piece Handles Usopp's Story

Upon meeting Usopp, the Straw Hats are taken to meet Kaya, who owns the shipyard in Syrup Village. However, despite claiming that he's good friends with Kaya, the group isn't welcome at the manor, especially by Khaladore, Kaya's long-time butler. Of course, just like in the source material, Usopp is someone who likes to tell white lies in order to make people feel better, and it rubs many in the town the wrong way.

It started when his mother was sick, and he was waiting for his father, Yasopp, a famous pirate, to return. He would tell everyone in Syrup Village that pirates were coming, but after many years, the townsfolk grew tired of it. They started not to believe him anymore, which didn't really matter until Khaldaore was revealed to be a pirate himself, Captain Kuro. Wanting to steal Kaya's fortune for himself, he plans to kill the girl on her 18th birthday, and Usopp is one of the few who stand in his way. While the story plays out differently than the manga, it more or less ends the same way, with Kuro being defeated by Luffy and his crew. But one missing component would have made childish Usopp's actions make a lot more sense.

Why the Usopp Pirates Are Important to Their Captain's Story

In both the anime and the manga, Usopp keeps up his persona with the help of a group of kids known as the Usopp Pirates. They follow their captain around, believing him to be a great warrior who helps keep Syrup Village safe. That's more or less a lie, of course, but Usopp's lies actually instill a sense of bravery in the kids. In fact, they help save the day by defending Kaya from Kuro's crew despite the danger it puts them in.

That moment, as well as future ones where the kids learn of Usopp's adventures, prove the impact the character had on those around him. Sure, he cried wolf too many times, but by giving the Usopp Pirates a fantastical view of life, he ensured Syrup Village and Kaya would be in good hands when he left for the Grand Line with the Straw Hats. The Usopp Pirates may play a role in a future season of the Netflix series, but for now, their love for their captain is sorely missed.
