The Nun II Director Michael Chaves Confirms Lots of Conjuring Clues Lurk in the Movie

Director Michael Chaves describes The Nun II as a relentless horror film with tie-ins to the Conjuring Universe.

Valak returns in The Nun II with heavy-handed horror and more clues that tie the films' characters to the broader Conjuring Universe.

Director Michael Chaves says The Nun II feeds on a renewed obsession for procedural horror movies as it builds new and deeper ties to the first Conjuring. He's also goading viewers to look out for clues deliberately dropped or lurking throughout the film. The director admitted to /Film there was an intentional buildup that circles back to the Conjuring movies, but they're still hashing out the details of that culmination. "I think that they're still writing it. They're still working on it. There's definitely Conjuring: Last Rites is coming," he confirmed, but also confessed there's more than one way to approach that ending.

Chaves also entertained the possibility that all the pivotal plots in the Conjuring Universe could converge for a truly satisfying, yet horrific resolution. "As an audience member, I would 100% see it." He cautiously continued, saying "I couldn't give away what I know about what's being developed, but I know that they're going to end with a bang. I know that there is a great finale being planned for Last Rites and as to what or who's in it ... I don't want to give away any spoilers."

Casting Vera and Taissa Farmiga

Probably the biggest question left hanging from The Nun films involved the not-so-concidental casting of Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene. The actor's real-life relation and resemblance to Vera Farmiga definitely raised speculation about the true identity of the characters they're playing. Chaves teased there's really something more to it, saying "I mean, I think from the beginning it was too much of a coincidence to have nearly identical sisters in the same movie… I think it was always part of the ultimate goal is to tie them in and I think that there's always been a connection."

The director also recognized some of the fan theories he read were onto something. "It's funny because there are ... there's clues even in the very first Nun movie if you look at it, and I think people have picked this up online because I think I have seen this online." He added, "People have picked out a connection before and so the idea of bloodline has already been in there. This definitely expands that conversation. Yeah, it definitely expands."

The Nun II is now playing in theaters.
