Wonka Director Sees the Film as a 'Companion Piece' to the Gene Wilder Classic

Paul King, director of the upcoming film Wonka, touts the prequel as a companion piece to the iconic 1971 Gene Wilder classic. Paul King, director of the highly anticipated 2023 film Wonka, reveals the prequel as a companion piece to the wildly popular Gene Wilder classic. Paul King, best known for the Paddington film series, sat down with EW to discuss the intentions for his 2023 offering. Wonka is set to be a prequel to the classic 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder, exploring the titular Willy Wonka before his factory and fame. Speaking with EW, King stated, "I didn't want to reinvent those things 'cause it felt like that '71 movie had come up with these incredibly enduring, iconic looks. What I wanted this movie to be was like a companion piece to that movie. If you imagine those people in that world 25 years earlier, that was my starting process. Eventually, he would grow into that person and that factory." The estate of a

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's Big Stunt Perfectly Sums up the Franchise

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One massive motorcycle stunt not only sends shivers down the spine but also sums up the whole franchise. Even after so many memorable stunts throughout the franchise's six movies, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One accomplishes the feat of delivering a new bigger, even more ambitious stunt, with Tom Cruise once again springing into action himself. It consists of an anxiety-inducing sequence in which Ethan Hunt drives off a cliff with a motorcycle, leading up to the film's final and most thrilling moments. Huge, ambitious stunts are something viewers can expect in every Mission: Impossible movie. They not only suck the audience right into the action but also capture a unique sense of immediate danger that only Tom Cruise can convey by putting his soul, quite literally, into it. Mission: Impossible 7 Delivers the Franchise's Best Stunt At this point, there's little left for Cruise to do. Over six movies, he climbed the

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Breaks Even at the Box Office

After an underwhelming start at the box office, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has now broken even with its budget. While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn't quite live up to studio expectations at the box office, the film is not a total bomb, as it has now officially broken even on its exorbitant budget. Collider reports that the sequel, which is the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones movie series, has reached $302 million at the international box office. That pushes the film just past its estimated budget of $300 million. Around $145 million was earned domestically for Dial of Destiny while another $157 million came in from overseas ticket sales. While climbing to $302 million is commendable, the problem is how the high budget and additional marketing costs will likely result in Disney and Lucasfilm seeing very little in terms of profits made from the movie. The reviews weren't perfect, though they were more on the positive side, as Indiana Jones and the D

Mission: Impossible 7 Box Office on Track for Global Dominance

Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's box office is expected to dominate globally in its first weekend of theatrical release. Tom Cruise shakes the world once more as Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is set to take the top spot at the worldwide box office. Per Deadline, the seventh installment of the long-running film franchise based on the popular 1960s television series launched to a 5-day start of $78 million in North America. While that number falls short of the initial $85-$95 million domestic estimate, Dead Reckoning Part One, as of this writing, has amassed a global haul of $122.2 million. Should these numbers climb higher, the film could overtake the worldwide first-week opening of another aging franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Mission: Impossible's Blaze of Glory Despite the surprising domestic number, Dead Reckoning Part One has already surpassed the franchise high of the previous entry, 2018's Mission: Impo

Marvel Teases the Return of the Punisher...But 'Who is the Punisher'?

Marvel released a teaser image suggesting that a brand-new Punisher would be making their debut in the Marvel Universe...or is Frank Castle's return? Marvel released a teaser today hinting at a brand-new Punisher, with a Rod Reis piece of promotional art simply asking, "Who is the Punisher?" This new Punisher figure has another version of the Punisher's famous skull logo that has caused Marvel some controversy in recent years. Frank Castle seemed like he was done with the Punisher name at the end of his last series, so it would appear as though this is a brand-new character taking on the mantle of the Punisher. Or has Frank Castle reclaimed the name? Marvel will reveal all of the answers very soon at Comic-Con International at San Diego. Relaunching The Punisher’s Best Book Is The Only Way To Save Him The Punisher is apparently done at Marvel Comics, but reviving him in all his gritty glory is the best way to tap into a different market of readers. The Punisher is one

The Latest Superman: Legacy Casting Suggests a Terrific Team Exists in the DCU

Superman: Legacy features both Mr. Terrific and Metamorpho, suggesting that their team, The Terrifics, could be in the DC Universe's future. Superman: Legacy keeps having the most surprising announcements made concerning its cast, with many of these characters being separate from the Superman mythos entirely. The latest of these heroes to join the fray is the shapeshifting elemental Metamorpho, who's played by Anthony Carrigan. While it might seem random for him to have any sort of role in the film, he's likely there to establish the presence of another team. In the comic books, Metamorpho was recently a member of The Terrifics, a group which was an expy of a certain other company's First Family. They were led by Mr. Terrific, who himself has just been cast for the DC Universe, as well. This means that the next Superman movie could see the popular team either already formed or coming together for the first time. Who Are The Terrifics in the DC Universe? Created by Jeff

Superman: Legacy Has a Chance to Right One of the Superhero Genre's Biggest Wrongs

Superman: Legacy will feature Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, who will hopefully fare much better than the actor's controversial X-Men movie character. More members of the cast for Superman: Legacy have been revealed, and this goes beyond just the Man of Steel's usual supporting cast. Fellow heroes from the Justice League are seemingly already established, with one of them being Mr. Terrific. Played by Edi Gathegi, the DC hero isn't the actor's first foray into superhero movies. Gathegi also portrayed Darwin in X-Men: First Class, though the role was a sadly short one. The fate of the character was something that rubbed many fans the wrong way. Thankfully, his presence in the new DC Universe movies can become far more prominent, especially if Mister Terrific has the same ties as his comic book counterpart. X-Men: First Class Did Edi Gathegi Dirty Based on a character that debuted in X-Men: Deadly Genesis #2 (by Ed Brubaker and Pete Woods), Darwin's presence in the preq

Insidious: The Red Door's Biggest Plot Holes and Unanswered Mysteries

Insidious: The Red Door has the Lamberts fighting forces from the Further once again. But while it's a simple story, there are many cracks. As Insidious: The Red Door unfolds, the franchise goes back to basics by unleashing the Lipstick Face Demon again. This time, the entity has a lot more power over Josh and Dalton Lambert, intent on claiming the latter as his own. Patrick Wilson directs this outing and brings his Josh back into action against the being that initially targeted him years ago. But this time, the being has a greater reach. That said, it's a straightforward film that nods to the first chapter of the Further. Once more, Josh has to travel to the macabre realm to get his son back, which feels like an apropos note for Wilson to say goodbye. However, as simple as the plot is, cracks in the narrative and quaint mysteries arise, taking momentum and creative energy away from the story.

Mission Impossible 7's Biggest Cliffhanger Doesn't Involve Ethan Hunt

The biggest threat to Ethan Hunt's mission in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is Pom Klementieff's Paris, who might menace him again. The Mission: Impossible films tend to keep to a firm view of morality. While some characters push moral boundaries or introduce shades of grey to the movies, there's usually a fine line between people working alongside the Impossible Mission Force and against them -- even when the IMF finds itself tangentially on the opposite side of the law. But a new character may bring a welcome bit of chaos to the franchise. In the action-packed Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt faces off with plenty of familiar faces from his past, while also contending with new enemies, such as Pom Klementieff's Paris. But Paris' role in the film turns out to be deceptively flexible, setting her up to potentially become a crucial ally or the franchise's next Big Bad -- if she survived the events of the film. Here's h

Deadpool 3 Is Set to Be the Franchise's Most Meta Installment Yet

Set photos from Deadpool 3 show a surprising setting for a fight between Wade and Wolverine, featuring the franchise's biggest fourth wall break yet. Early images from Deadpool 3 have teased just how far the Merc With a Mouth is about to push his fourth-wall-breaking tendencies. The Deadpool movies have always been heavy on irreverent humor, but Wade Wilson's most distinctive comedic trait is his ability to realize he is a fictional character in a comic book movie. While the first two entries in the franchise saw Wade making plenty of references to 20th Century Fox and the nature of superhero movies, Deadpool 3 looks set to go even further in breaking the boundary between fiction and reality. The third Deadpool film will officially bring the franchise under the Marvel Studios banner, following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios), paving the way for Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First, though, he will have

What Was The First Anime Movie Released In America? And Is It Worth Watching Today?

Today anime movies are frequently shown in American theaters, but there is some debate over which film originally kicked off the trend. For modern anime fans, it's hard to imagine anime films not being shown in America. Today, every big-name anime film tends to make its way to American theaters or, at the very least, appear on American streaming services. These anime films receive as much attention and pre-release hype as American blockbusters, with their releases being big, heavily talked about events. But this wasn't always the case, as until recently, many anime films didn't come out in America. But what was the first anime film to officially arrive in the States? Unsurprisingly there is some debate surrounding this prestigious title. And this debate hinges heavily on what classifies as a proper release. The two films widely considered to hold the crown are 1958's Hakujaden and 1959's Shōnen Sarutobi Sasuke. Both films were brought to the USA in 1961, with Hakuja

Mission Impossible 7 Reminds Viewers Tom Cruise Has a Sense of Humor

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1's surprising moments of humor remind audiences that Tom Cruise has a talent for comedy, not just action. The trailers for the latest entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise have highlighted its action and adventure, but the movie has more to it than that. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One does everything fans of Tom Cruise's series expect, yet it's also a deceptively funny film. It has some genuinely big comedic turns and laugh-out-loud moments. Many of them are set off by Cruise, who occasionally peels back the dramatic and serious layer to Ethan Hunt to play a befuddled and even overwhelmed agent trying his best to deal with the situations at hand. That keeps the film's largely unrelenting action from becoming overwhelming, and helps humanize the occasionally cold Ethan to audiences. More than anything, though, it serves as a good reminder that Cruise's extensive action experience comes with comedy chops t

Smallville Is Better Than the Arrowverse Shows for One Simple Reason

The Arrowverse had plenty of unique heroes and villains. Yet, no matter how many shows are created, Smallville stands above them all. Smallville was a trendsetter for modern superhero TV shows. It went through phases of freak of the week to progressive, connected storytelling. Clark Kent battled villains like Brainiac, Bizzaro, Doomsday and the recurring fear of Lex Luthor finding out his secret. Smallville also acted as a blueprint for a live-action team-up of the Justice League, bringing in Justin Hartley's Green Arrow, Alan Ritchson's Aquaman and other League members. That set the stage for things like the Arrowverse, which took DC TV beyond what anyone could've imagined. But Smallville is better than its successors, having valued character development more than crossovers. Of course, Smallville wasn't perfect, as it dealt with its fair share of issues, such as Lana Lang's character motivation. However, regardless of any issues, there's one aspect that Smallv

Indiana Jones Has One of Cinema's Greatest Origins

Indiana Jones changed the adventure genre for the better with its many movies. On top of that, it also featured cinema's greatest origin story. The Indiana Jones franchise has the unique luxury of each movie covering different points in Indiana Jones' life. Whether it's 1925 or just after the moon landing, he's seen the growth of the world in ways few have. But even still, not much was known about the iconic adventurer until Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the final movie of the trilogy, audiences finally got some backstory on Indy by offering an origin that has become the best one of the genre and cinema as a whole. Origin stories have been around for as long as franchises, and while some stories may not have seemed like origins at first, like Universal Picture's The Wolf Man, they served as the beginning of a larger journey. The Last Crusade chose to instead break the mold of the origin story, and rather than tell the story throughout the movie, it did so i

Indiana Jones 5 Star Explains How Indy's Reunion With [Spoiler] Happened

An Indiana Jones legacy cast member unpacks their character's unexpected return to the franchise during Dial of Destiny's epilogue. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Karen Allen recently explained how Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) engineered the movie's reunion between her character, Marion Ravenwood, and Indy (Harrison Ford). Allen discussed Marion's surprise cameo during Dial of Destiny's epilogue in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "Probably all that Marion needed to know is that he was still very much mourning the loss of the relationship," she said. "There's that moment in the film where Indy tells Helena about [his and Marion's son] Mutt being killed, and so she probably just said, 'Please come see him. He needs you. He's not the same man.' We don't know entirely what's driven them apart. It appears that his way of dealing with the grief was to drink too much and go into a very internal place, b
